르네 지라르의 사상과 개혁주의 문화관과 변증학 = Thoughts of Rene Girard and Reformed Concept of Culture and Apologetics

This article attempts to deal with the recent renaissance of Christian philosophy and apologetics mainly in the light of Rene Girard`s theory. Rene Girard was recently elected to one of only 40 members, or immortels,of the Academie Francaise, France`s highest intellectual honor. He has continued to amplify his Christian apologetics in subsequent writings. He argues for Christianity`s unique status among religions. When properly understood, his mimetic theory can provide the basis and framework for a Christian apologetics that remains faithful to traditional doctrine while allowing those new to the faith a unique vista for understanding the essence of Christianity. Christianity, for Girard, is the end of archaic religions because it reveals that the victim is innocent. It is Girard`s theory, it seems to me, that most urgently needs to be debated, now that atheist triumphalism is sweeping all nuances away. Thinkers like Dawkins and Hitchens leap at once to the conclusion that religion is the cause of this violence and sexual obsession, and that all the crimes committed in the name of religion can be seen as the definitive disproof of it. Not so, argues Girard. By submitting to violence, Christ reveals and uproots the structural matrix of all religion. Christ and Bodhisattvas are also different. The Christ, because of the scandal of particularity, must be unique while Bodhisattvas are manifold. While Christians are traditionally exhorted to be like Christ, Buddhists are called to be Bodhisattvas. The essential difference between the uniqueness of Christ and the plurality of Bodhisattvas is not to be overlooked. Unlike Christianity and Islam, the historicity of a unique founding figure is not intrinsic in Buddhism: all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are the same and interchangeable. The idea of a plurality of Buddhas is common. Some Buddhists believe Jesus Christ was a bodhisattva. But the exceptional breaking and transgression of Bodhisattva in the path of initiation can be understood as the staged crimes and methodical transgression of taboos on the side of the reconciliatory victims. The initiatory vows of Bodhisattva involves exceptional breaking of basic moral or disciplinary precepts in order to accomplish a higher aim. These examples of exceptional licence to break the basic rules of morality in special cases of alturistic motivation is to be read from the perspective of genetic mechanism of surrogate victim.
