According to the education statistics service, the number of international students in Korea’s higher education institutions in 2019 was 16,165, an increase of 17,960 from the previous year. As the number of international students increases, a system are in place to ensure that international students can live in a safe environment while living in Korea. This is that international universities are obliged to enroll in the International Student Disease Accident Insurance upon admission to Korean universities.
International Student Insurance is a foreigner who is staying in Korea to guarantee economic loss from accidents or illnesses while studying in Korea. In this study, we tried to find out the overall recognition of foreign students and their understanding of the insurance system, and how they are used. Among the international students staying in Korea, we conducted an online survey and interview with a representative group of Chinese students. The main results were as follows.
First, understanding of insurance terms, understanding of insurance contents, understanding of insurance claims method, and understanding of claims documents were 2 points. Second, 79.0% of the respondents said they did not claim insurance due to illness or injury. Third, 71.0% of the respondents answered that they thought they received sufficient information when they signed up for insurance, and 54.8% said that school counseling was the best method for delivering information on international student insurance.
Based on these results, this suggestion is as follows. In order for international students to provide information such as insurance coverage, it should be easily solved and delivered, and various language support services should be activated. In particular, when foreign students who are temporarily deferred until the end of February 2021 are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance, they should be able to make up for these areas before implementing the system, considering that they do not understand the insurance.
