The purpose of this study was to investigate cognition about parish nursing of the students attending Christian nursing college and to provide the basic resources for developing parish nursing academic program for students. Subjects of this study were students who are attending 4 years course of Christian nursing college in Junjoo, Daekoo and Busan city. Research tools used for this study were modified version of the study composed by Hwang(2000) to parish nurse program questionaire by Djupe(1990). Data were collected from 1st, June to 31st July by teacher's helping of the college. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffer test with SPSS/PC program.
The summary of the study was as follows ;
1. The total mean point score of the cognition about parish nursing service was 4.11±0.421(max, 5; min, 1). Highest score among categories is spiritual nursing (4.23±0.62) and then HOSPICE care(4.21±), individual counseling(4.17±0.51), group health education(4.15±0.12), the advice on choosing hospital or health center(4.14±0.54), home nursing service (4.13±0.51), individual health teaching (4.11±0.55), health screening (4.02±0.60) and home visiting (3.82±0.57)
2. There was no relationship between general characteristics of the subjects and student's cognition about parish nursing statistically significant differences.
But there were significant differences between the student's cognition about parish nursing and related religions; 'attending church'(F=10.125, p=0.000), 'grade of faith in church' (F=3.565, p=0.004), 'history of faith '(F=3.648, p=0.006), 'family's faith'(F=5.248, p=0.000), 'participate of church service' (F=5.242, p=0.001), 'any special program in church '(F=6.196, p=0.000) and 'participate in special program in church' (F=6.817, p=0.000).
Also there were significant differences between the student's cognition and related parish nursing; 'knowing about parish nursing' (F=13.106, p=0.000), 'need of parish nursing '(F-9.972, p=0.000), 'participate to parish nursing'(F=13.149, p=0.000) and 'hope to work as a parish nurse after graduate college '(F=5.861, p=0.001).
In conclusion, the level of student's cognition about parish nursing was comparatively high score and positively. It is necessary to develop the curriculum of the parish nursing to give more hope and challenge to the students.
