표상에 대한 파피노의 후천적 환원에 관하여 = On D. Papineau’s A posteriori Reduction for Representation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자연주의자 의미이론은 자연주의의 틀 내에서 표상을 설명하려 한다. 특히 목적론적 의미론은 표상을 생물학적 기능에 의해 설명하면서 자연 선택의 역사를 강조해왔다. 그런데 최근에 피터 슐테(Peter Shulte)는 표상의 역사적 속성이 표상의 본래적 속성이 아니기 때문에 표상의 인과-성향적 속성을 설명할 수 없다고 비판했다. 이 비판에 데이비드 파피노(David Papineau)는 자연종으로서의 표상을 기능적 종으로 분류하고, 공통의 선택압이 표상의 본질적 속성이므로 표상은 이 속성에 의해 후천적으로 환원된다고 주장한다. 필자는 표상 체계의 기능이 유전자 발현과 긴밀한 관련이 있다는 점을 근거로 표상을 기능적 종으로만 환원할 수는 없으며, 나아가 표상을 기능적 종으로 환원하는 일이 실재에 관한 모형으로는 유용할지 모르나 실재 자체에 관한 언질 면에서는 성공적이지 않다고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Naturalist theory of meaning attempts to explain representations within a naturalistic framework. In particular, teleological semantics has emphasized the history of natural selection while explaining representations in terms of biological functions. However, Peter Schulte recently criticized that the causal-dispositional properties of representations cannot be explained because the historical properties of representations are not the original properties of representations. In response to this criticism, David Papineau classifies representations as natural kinds as functional kinds and argues that since common selection pressure is an essential property of representations, representations are reduced A posteriori by this property. I believes that representations cannot be reduced to only functional kinds based on the fact that the function of the representation system is closely related to gene expression. Furthermore, reducing representations to functional kinds may be useful as a model for reality, but is not successful in terms of what it says about reality itself.
