This thesis is the first of two studies that analyze the livelihood of fishermen in Seomyeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, focusing on changes in fishing technology developed in the 20th century. First, this study analyzes the livelihood of fishermen in Seomyeon, known as one of the largest fishing villages in the West Sea of the Korean Peninsula around 1910. Through this, it is shown that until the end of the 19th century, fishermen in this area were engaged in a complex livelihood of fishing in spring, fishing in autumn, and fishing in winter. However, at the end of the 19th century, they faced a livelihood crisis due to the extinction of herring in the West Sea and the decline of the fishing industry. Through ethnographic descriptions of specific fishery cases, this study explores fishing expeditions in various fishing grounds in the West Sea from Jeonnam to Pyeongbuk in pursuit of yellow croakers migrating northward aside the western coast of the Korean Peninsula, which have existed since before the 19th century, despite changes in fishing technology. It shows that fishing practices persisted until the middle of the 20th century.
