예술 실천을 통한 세월호 참사의 기억 운동 - ‘세월호 연극제’를 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

세월호 참사 이후 유가족, 활동가, 예술가 등 다양한 주체들이 연대하여 기억 운동 실천을 이어가고 있다. 특히 예술가들은 세월호 참사가 품은 개인적, 사회적 고통을 집단적 차원에서 해석하며 적극적인 기억 행위를 실천하고 있다. 본 연구는 ‘세월호 연극제’를 사례로 예술가가 사회적 참사를 기억하는 과정을 분석하고, 예술가의 사회 참여라는 ‘예술적 수행성’이 갖고 있는 ‘사회적인 것(the social)의 의미’를 시민사회의 맥락에서 탐구한다. 본 연구는 참사 이후 세월호 연극제의 전개 양상을 시기별로 살펴보고, 사회적 참사에 대한 기억투쟁과 예술 실천이 교차하는 ‘수행성’의 사회적 의미를 고찰한다. 특별히 사회적 참사의 기억 안에서 양립해 온 고통의 서사화와 트라우마의 ‘재현 불-가능성’이라는 이중적 문제가 예술가들에게 어떠한 의미로 구성되고 있는지 분석한다. 본 연구는 ‘참여행동연구’를 활용하며 연구 사례에 관한 ‘문헌 분석’과 연극제 참여자 6인과 ‘심층 인터뷰’를 실행하였다. 연구 결과, 세월호 연극제는 세월호 참사의 진상규명 활동, 검열과 미투 운동 등 예술계 내외부의 현안을 통과하며 시기별 변곡점을 맞았다. 참여자들의 예술 실천은 예술장(field) 내의 상징투쟁으로 국한되지 않았고, 예술가들은 작업의 미학적 자아와 시민적 주체를 오가며 ‘사회적인 것’과 ‘도덕적 보편성’의 의미를 성찰하였다. 또한 본 연구는 예술가들이 작업 안에서 고통의 ‘재현 불-가능성’을 마주하면서도 이를 문화적 기억으로 이행하기 위해 다양한 예술적 형식을 모색해 왔음을 살펴보았다.

After the Sewol ferry disaster, various social agents such as bereaved families, activists, and artists have participated in social movements to remember the disaster. In particular, some artists have practiced active performativity in their theater project by interpreting the personal and social suffering of the Sewol ferry disaster on a collective level. This study discusses the artists’ performativity of remembering social disaster through the ‘Theater Project on Sewol Ferry’ case, and the author conducted participatory action research on the meaning of ‘the social’ that ‘artistic performance’ of the artists social activism has in the context of civil society. This study outlines the development of the Theater Project on Sewol Ferry by period, and discusses the social meaning of ‘performativity’ where memory struggles for social disasters and the performativity of art intersect. In particular, it analyzes the meaning of the social problem for artists where narratives of social suffering and the ‘un-representability’ of collective trauma are seemingly incompatible in society. This study conducted ‘participatory action research’. Based on the literature analysis and in-depth interviews with six artists on the research cases, the Theater Project on Sewol Ferry reached an inflection point in each period as the festival passed through social issues. These issues include the activities of reconstruction of truth of the disaster, art censorship, and the #MeToo movement. It was found that the participants’ practice of art was not limited to the symbolic struggle within the art field. In fact, artists demanded social change through remembering the disaster in the public sphere of civil society, reflecting on the meaning of the social and the moral as connecting the aesthetic ego and the civic subject. Furthermore, this study explains that artists’ activism has participated in various in artistic performances to transition the disaster into cultural memories while facing the ‘un-representability’ of suffering in their work.
