강우식 시(詩) 문학 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

문학에서의 성(性)이라는 소재는 비단 우리나라 뿐 만이 아니라 동서고금(東西古今)을 막론하고 심리적 측면에서 성(性)과 관련된 표현과 소재를 사용하여 자신들만의 작품을 창조해 내고 있다. 한국 현대시에서도 에로티즘의 형상화는 인간 생명에 내재된 원초적인 본연의 속성을 내면화한 것이라 할 수 있다. 물론 우리나라에도 성(性)을 다룬 시인들이 더러 존재하지만, 강우식은 60년대에 등단한 대표적인 시인으로 ‘꽃’을 비롯한 자연물을 소재로 에로티즘적 생명성을 내면화시키고 있다.
강우식 시인은 일찍이 우리 시단(詩壇)에 신선한 충격을 주며 문단의 이목을 집중시켰는데 성(性)을 소재로 한 다소 파격적인 표현을 사용한 내용면과, 사행시(四行詩)라는 형식을 고집한 형식면이 그의 시(詩) 작품의 가장 커다란 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 한국의 현대시에서 강우식이 차지하고 있는 위치 때문에 전반적인 한국의 현대시를 연구하며 그의 작품을 부분적으로 검토하여 제시한 연구는 존재한다. 하지만 강우식 시인과 그의 작품만을 대상으로 구체화시킨 연구는 많지 않다. 이에 본 논문은 강우식의 시집에 실려 있는 작품들의 분석을 통하여 그의 시(詩) 세계를 살펴보고자 한다. 우선 시인이 추구하고자한 문학적 지향점이 무엇인가를 주제론적 분석을 통해 살펴보고, 아울러 사행시(四行詩)와 시극(詩劇) 등의 형식을 통해 시인이 구현하고자 했던 방법의 실체를 구명해 보고자 한다.

본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 우선 강우식의 시(詩) 세계를 구축하는 데에 기여하고 있는 내용상의 특징과 형식상의 특징의 탐색과 파악을 위해 강우식의 시(詩) 세계의 시적 원리와 특성이 어떻게 형상화되고 있는지를 고찰해 보았다.
강우식 시(詩)의 내용적 특징은 성(性)을 소재로 한 시(詩), 그가 추구하는 사랑 시(詩), 자연과 함께하는 시(詩), 역사 시(詩) 등으로 구분 지을 수 있다. 성(性)을 소재로 한 강우식의 작품들은 성(性)을 소재로 한 시(詩)는 쓸 수가 없다는 생각과 아름다운 단어들로만 시(詩)를 써야 한다는 시(詩)에 대한 고정관념들을 깨뜨려 주었다. 이러한 성(性)에 관한 시편들은 오히려 우리 사회를 건강하게 이끌 수 있는 한 방법을 실험적으로 보여 주고 있는 것이라 볼 수 있다. 그러나 강우식 시인이 자신의 시(詩)에서 추구하는 것이 육체적인 사랑만을 위주로 하는 것은 아니다. 그는 사행시집인 『설연집(雪戀集)』을 통해서 자신도 순수하고 아름다운 사랑을 노래하고 싶어 한다는 것을 널리 알렸다. 또한 강우식은 시(詩)를 쓰기 시작하면서부터 자연을 배경으로, 자연을 염두에 두고 줄곧 작품을 써왔으며, 그의 작품은 인위적으로 무엇을 추구하는 것이 아니라 자연(自然)속에서 자연스러움을 추구하는 것을 목적으로 했다. 한편, 강우식은 역사를 소재로 하여서도 작품을 썼는데 그의 두 번째 시집인 『고려(高麗)의 눈보라』라는 작품 전체를 통하여 일관되게 흐르는 주제의식은 이 민족의 역사성이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 그가 가지고 있는 가치관 중 강인한 역사의식과 민중의 한을 담은 내용들이 많다는 것을 알 수 있다.
형식면에 있어서는 그의 대표적인 특징인 사행시(四行詩)를 비롯하여 연작시, 체험을 바탕으로 한 산문시, 시극(詩劇) 등의 분류를 통해 분석하였는데 강우식 시(詩)의 가장 큰 특징인 사행시(四行詩)는 고전시가와의 연계로 삼행의 시조 전통을 수용하여 사행으로 변모·창작했다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 시인이 시(詩) 장르에서부터 우리의 전통에 그 인식을 두고 있다는 의미이다. 또한 그는 다양한 형태의 연작시, 즉 장시(長詩)의 작품들도 다수 보여 주었는데 그것이 한두 편에 그치는 것이 아니라 삼십 편이나 되는 연작을 형성했다는 점에서도 그 나름대로 의미를 찾을 수 있으리라고 여겨진다. 아울러 강우식의 두 번째 시집인 『고려(高麗)의 눈보라』에서는 시행을 나누지 않고 서정적으로 시화하여 묘사하는 산문시를 보여주었다. 문학이나 시(詩)를 쓰는 일차적(一次的)인 이유는 자신을 위로하기 위함이라고 하는데 강우식은 이 작품을 통해서 이러한 자신의 목적을 달성했으리라고 본다.

위와 같은 연구 결과를 바탕으로 하여 강우식 시(詩)의 시사적 의의를 살펴보았다. 내용상의 시사에서는 강우식 시(詩)의 대표적인 특성이라고 할 수 있는 성(性)적 관심을 중심으로 하여 에로티즘적 생명성 추구, 생명 원리에 내재된 자유의지의 발현, 그리고 생명 존재의 실체에 관한 소통적 질서 구축 등의 세부 내용을 통하여 강우식 시(詩)가 갖는 시사적 특징을 제시하였고, 형식상의 시사에서는 그의 시(詩)에 드러나 있는 사행시(四行詩)의 특징을 통해서 시사점을 고찰하였다.
본 논문을 통해 강우식 시(詩) 자체의 특성은 물론 시(詩) 세계를 총체적으로 이해하는 기회를 가지게 될 것이며 한국 현대 시사에서 독자적인 시(詩) 세계를 구축한 것으로 평가할 수 있는 강우식 시(詩)의 특징과 그의 시(詩) 세계를 알아보는 작업은 그런 의미에서 매우 중요한 일이라 생각된다. 또한 우리는 강우식이라는 시인의 작품과 그의 인생을 통해서 시(詩)를 통해 얻을 수 있는 다양한 의미와 형식 및 작품을 통해 시대적·사회적 연결고리를 확인할 수 있었고 궁극적으로는 작가의 인생관을 통해서 우리가 살아가고 있는 현대에서 얻을 수 있는 교훈 및 교육적 효과를 얻을 수 있으리라 생각된다.
본 연구가 강우식의 시(詩)를 분석하고 제시하는 기초 자료로 끝나는 연구라고는 생각하지 않는다. 이를 통해 강우식의 시(詩)에서 나타내고 있는 여러 접근 방법과 해석 방식, 그리고 다양한 분석 방법을 비단 강우식 뿐만이 아니라 다른 시인에게도 적용시켜, 학생들에게 시(詩)문학이 지니고 있는 다양성과 장점을 알려주고 싶은 것이 이 논문의 궁극적인 목적이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Sexuality in literary works is a critical subject matter not only in current Korean literature but also in all times and countries, which especially relates psychological aspects with its literary expressions and ideas in writing. The representation of eroticism in modern Korean poetry is viewed as an internalization of the basic nature and instinct inherent in human life.
Once in a while there were found some Korean poets dealing with sexuality, and Woo-Sik Kang is a representative figure of 1960s who internalizes erotic vitality of human nature by adopting such natural objects as flowers. The poet gave the Korean poetical circles a literary shock and had their attention during the times. It is his feature that he adopted unconventional expressions relating to sexuality and willingly wrote his works in the form of quatrain.
Existing researches have been done to evaluate and review Woo-Sik Kang's works because he held an important position in the history of modern Korean poetry. Concrete research and exploration focused upon the poet and his works, however, are still rare. Thus, this paper deals with his perspectives towards poetry by analysing his collection of poems. First of all, thematic approach seeks to answer what he pursued as a literary orientation. And the meaning and substance of his preferred writing method such as a poetical drama and quatrain as a matter of form are inquired.

The research outcomes are summarized as follows: The question of how his poetic views, principles, and characteristics are visualized and represented is studied in order to understand the conceptual and format features, which contribute to his poetic works.
It is necessary to explore the thematic, conceptual traits of his poems relating respectively to sexuality, love, nature, and history. The pursuit of sexuality in his poems broke a stereotype idea that sexuality-related poems are not allowed to write during the times when poems were thought to be written only with charming words and expressions. His works were, in this sense, so experimental that poetic works involved with sexuality likely played a role to lead our society in a more fruitful and healthier way.
It was not that only bodily love emotions were pursued in his poems. He showed readers that he was eager to sing pure, beautiful love in such his collection as Snow's Love, which is a quatrain collection. Since he began writing poems, his interest in nature was not disregarded all the time. He aimed at seeking what being natural is, not by creating something superficial but by habituating in nature.
He wrote, in addition, about history. What is consistently told in Snowstorm in Goryeo, his second poetic collection, is the historical consciousness that the people had in mind. Hence, it is certain to conclude that one of his sense of values was his strong historical consciousness and that he wrote about the grudge and heartburning of the people in the works.

Another representative feature of his poetic style is summarized and classified as quatrain, sequence, and prose poem based on experiences. Quatrain, which is most critical in explaining his style, was developed and created into four-line format by adopting the features of three-line Korean verse. This shows that the poet willingly cared about our poetic tradition even in terms of the genre.
And he used the format of sequence or a long series of poems in many of his writings. It is meaningful that his works in this format of sequence were not rare but shaped a series, which is about 30 pieces in number.
Prose poems are also a meaning finding. In his second collection Snowstorm in Goryeo, he showed us the poem which does not divide lines and describes and lyrically poetizes his ideas and impressions. The primary concern to write poems is said to console and comfort the poet himself, and he is shown to satisfy his objectives by his writing in this sense.

The implications of Woo-Sik Kang's poems are studied as above, based upon the research results. In terms of content or subject matter, his poems were focused on his interest in sexuality, his erotical pursuit of human vitality, manifestation and revelation of free will inherent in life principles, and construction of the communicative order regarding the substances of human existence, and these provide the evidence that he actively took part in forming current social issues. And the implications of his quatrain as well are explored in terms of format of his poems.
The paper offers an opportunity to fully, by and large, understand his views on what poetry is as well as an insight regarding the poet's poems and the features. The study in the sense is quite meaningful because the poet is evaluated as an independent, experimental figure in the history of modern Korean poetry.
And also the readers will be able to gain diverse connecting links which are social and historic, by studying his works, his life story, and many aspects such as meaning and format witnessed in poems. Ultimately, it is also beneficial that we obtain educational effects through the lessons about our modern society by reading his life viewed in the works.
It is not to be thought that the research analyzes his poems and offers basic materials to think about. Furthermore, the paper offers an analytical framework, method of approach and ways of interpretation which are applicable not only to Woo-Sik Kang's poems but also to other poets as well. The paper eventually seeks to inform students of the diversity and merits that poetry has as a literary genre.
