Due to recent development of health and medical treatment and increasing interests in the quality of life, demands of high-quality medical services are increasing. In order for various high-quality services to be implemented, high-quality nursing work force must be efficiently supplied and utilized.
However, the reality is that in hospitals and clinics with serious nursing manpower shortage, nurse assistants carry out nursing activities as an alternative nursing work force.
This study was conducted to grasp the areas of nursing services and multi-frequency tasks that nurse assistants are carrying out as an alternative work force for the nursing man power shortage, and to provide basic data for efficient utilization of nursing man power and qualitatively enhancement of nursing services in the future.
As for test subjects, among the nurse assistants working at hospitals, sanatoriums, and private clinics in Daegu Metropolitan City, 210 were randomly selected and responded to a survey composed of 9 questionaries on general characteristics and 65 on 13 nursing areas, which makes a total of 74 questionaries, and of which 191 were used for analysis.
The test was conducted from August 19th to September 30th, 2013.
The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. As for analysis method, the frequency and percentage were calculated in order to figure out the general characteristics. Also, in order to examine the working level of nurse assistants, the average and standard deviation were found, and in order to find out the job performance level in accordance with the general characteristics of nurse assistants, a t-test and One-way ANOVA were conducted.
A summary of the results of this study is as the following.
First of all, looking at the nursing performance degree in accordance with the general characteristics of the test subjects, older nurse assistants, married nurse assistants, sanatorium nurse assistants, ward working nurse assistants, and nurse assistants where the nurse assistants' rate is 40~70% showed higher performance degree than other nurse assistants.
Secondly, as for the nursing average performance degree of the test subjects, the highest was specimen and wastes management, followed by 'checking consumables and supplies', 'intramuscular injection', 'sterilization supplies exchange', 'preparing medicine (oral, injection, etc)', 'checking blood sugar', 'measuring vital signs', and 'simple dressing', in order.
Thirdly, examining the performance degree of subordinate areas in nursing showed 'bed, exchanging anulus, and managing supplies' to be the highest, followed by 'medicine administration', 'helping sleep and rest', 'measuring and examining', and 'nursing exercise', in order.
Fourthly, as for the lowest order of performance degree during subordinate areas of nursing of the test subjects, the average of 'dialysis' was the lowest, followed by 'nursing personal hygiene', 'adapting to cold/heat', 'nursing breathing', and 'nursing nutrition', in order.
Looking at the above results of this study, it can be known that currently, nurse assistants are carrying out various nursing duties in many areas at hospitals and clinics.
Especially, in sanatoriums, that has their legal status protected, all areas of nursing are being carried out and it was known that the performance frequency was high as well.
However, according to other studies, currently, nurse assistants perceive that the contents of the curriculum and practical contents they learned during the training course they took did not help much in actual working situations.
This indicates that the nursing services being carried out by nurse assistants in hospitals and clinics lack professionalism, and that there are concerns for the degrade in service quality and effects on patient safety.
In order to enhance working capabilities and improve the qualitative level of the nurse assistants man power as well as the qualitative improvement of nursing services in the future, it is thought that extending the education period and strengthening the education of nurse assistants are necessary.
Nurse assistants deal with the health and safety of patients and so thorough supervision is required during the training process, and in order to catch up with the rapidly changing environment of health and medical treatment, it needs to be developed into a professionalized education.
Also, even after completing the training process, the qualitative level management should be fulfilled through continuous supplementary education, and like the nurse license reentrance, basic systems should be improved actively such as the reentrance of nurse assistants license as well.
