본 연구는 1899년에 출판된 헬렌 배너만의 그림책 『꼬마 검둥이 삼보』가 지니는 아동문학으로서의 역사적 가치 및 작품에 나타난 주요 요소를 한국적 관점에서 이해하고자 하였다. 우선 지난 100년간 아동들의 지속적인 사랑을 받아온 『꼬마 검둥이 삼보』 그림책이 지니는 아동문학 고전으로서의 위상을 돌아보는 한편, 주인공 흑인들에 대한 스테레오타입과 인종차별주의적 요소를 살펴보았다. 또한 위 그림책의 주요 요소 중 ‘삼보 Sambo’에서 연상되는 주인공‘이름’, 삼보 가족의 검은 피부색, “꼬마” 삼보로 대표되는 ‘아동’의 위상, 그리고 이야기를 주도하는 또 하나의 등장인물 ‘호랑이’의 입지를 한국적 관점에서 재고하였다. 결론적으로 미국 역사를 반영한 다문화 교육적 관점에서는 『꼬마 검둥이 삼보』가 부정적으로 해석되고 평가될 여지가 있으나, 한국 문화적 맥락에서 이를 전향적으로 재해석한다면 긍정적인 측면에서 다문화 교육의 자료로 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 발견할 수 있다.

This article is to find out the historical and literary values and to re-discover the meanings of main characters or factors implied in the picture book 「The Story of Little Black Sambo」. 「The Story of Little Black Sambo」, written by Helen Bannerman in 1899, has remained on the shelves of libraries for more than 100 years as a classic of literature, but simultaneously has been criticized because of the stereotypes or racism implied in the book. On the other hand, 4 main factors or characters of the story are illuminated, such as the name of the main characters like ‘Sambo, Mumbo, and Jumbo’, Color ‘black’ of African people’s skin, a ‘little’ child represented as a problem solver, and ‘tigers’ as very important antagonists in the story. In conclusion, although the picture book「The Story of Little Black Sambo」could be interpreted or criticized negatively by American historical background or multicultural education, we can discover the possibilities applying the book as a material in multicultural education by re-interpreting with positive views from Korean cultural contexts.
