Hair loss is caused by hormone testosterone and the occurrence of seborrheic dermatitis due to scalp inflammation. 5α-reductase plays a role of converting testosterone to dihydritestosterone (DHT) which inhibits growing healthy hair, while shrinking hair follicles. In this study, NEC is evaluated that the regulation of 5α-reductase activity and inflammatory effects, compared with finasteride(5α-reductase inhibitor). The effects of NEC on hair loss and cell death were recorded by western blot and by ELISA for inflammatory effect. NEC leaded lower level than finasteride in expression of 5α-reductase in HFDPCs. NEC prevented apoptotic cell death resulting in prolonging the anagen phase through anti-apoptotic effects. Protein level of TNF-alpha, IL-1,4,6 which were increased by PMACI, were inhibited by NEC. Thus, these results imply that NEC can be a candidate for the regulating of hair loss.
