The purpose of this study is to explore what experiences middle-aged woman who experience anxiety experience in art therapy using ACT metaphors and what meaning they have for middle-aged woman. Participants in this study were anxiety-stricken middle-aged woman who conducted 24 sessions of art therapy, once to twice a week, from October 2020 to March 2021, based on Clandin and Connelly's methodology of narrative exploration.
As a result of the research participants' experiences gained through art therapy based on a narrative inquiry <Expression of anger while looking back at the past>, <Now-here to face reality>, <Purification of emotions>, <Recognizes me becoming flexible in life>, <Expressing sadness and anger towards family>, <guilt about one's family>, <discovering the pity and importance of family>, <I am tied to the past and anxious>, Ten meanings of <Becoming over Anxiety through Art Therapy> were derived, In order to reorganize this, <The Change of Individuals Through Art Therapy>, <A change in family relationships through art therapy>, Three themes of <Changes in Anxiety through Art Therapy> were derived.
Based on this, we found out what it means for middle-aged woman.
First, through art therapy using metaphors, the participants willingly accepted their anxiety and negative emotions and expressed them with creativity.
Second, they were playing various roles in the family and society of an anxious middle-aged woman. Art therapy provided the participants with a healing experience where they could fully take care of themselves and be supported.
Third, middle-aged woman suffering from anxiety visually express their repressed emotions through the work of ACT-based metaphor art therapy, and the process of meeting and understanding the participant's true self made the participant's life flexible.
The implications of this study contributing to the study of art therapy are as follows.
First, this study attempted a qualitative study of art therapy using the ACT metaphor for middle-aged woman suffering from anxiety, and it served as an opportunity to inform the interest in middle-aged woman suffering from anxiety and the need for research related to art therapy using the ACT metaphor.
Second, in this study, it provided an opportunity to know that anxiety relief through the results of multiple changes in ACT metaphor art therapy for middle-aged woman suffering from anxiety is also connected with changes in individuals and families.
Third, I looked deeply into the negative emotions caused by the various roles that middle-aged woman experience, and looked back at the reality that middle-aged woman suffering from anxiety lack family and social support.
This study understands middle-aged woman suffering from anxiety and expects that art therapy applying the metaphor of ACT will help middle-aged woman as therapeutic data for anxiety.
