기능적 이미지의 참조적 활용을 통한 창작과 그 예시 = Creation Through Referential Utilization of Functional Images and its Example

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are various materials that can be used as tangible and intangible starting points for visual creation, especially in the current technological environment where a lot of information is distributed. However, many practical considerations are required on what to choose at the beginning stage, how to design the work process, and how to set the standard for ‘completely created by myself’. In this paper, I examine design works made in various referential ways, using ‘image for image, which exists as a technical standard for producing aesthetic objects but has aesthetic properties in itself’, which can be defined as functional images or test images. In the process, it examines the referential and imitative aspects of functionalism’s historical origin, and describes the variability and extensibility that are logically included in the intention to designate function through exploration of the relationship between function and beauty. In addition, the standard, variable, and non-standard properties inherent in functional beauty, and the versatility of the referential creation method and related examples are also examined. 6 works that use functional images as a reference are described according to how they are used. The first case utilizes a functional composition aesthetically, the second case combines multiple visual creation methods, the third case uses functional images in a complex manner as a basic unit of visual creation, the fourth and the fifth cases uses visual metaphors and implicit expressions of text, and the sixth case of expanding the world of work using functional images as a critical tool for work is described.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

시각 창작에 있어 유무형의 출발점으로 삼을 수 있는 소재는 다양하며, 특히 수많은 정보가 유통되는 현재의 기술환경에서는 더욱 그러하다. 그러나 시작 단계에서 무엇을 선택할 것인지, 어떤 방식으로 작업과정을 설계할 것인지, 또 그 과정에서 ‘스스로 만들어 낸 것’에 관한 기준에 얼마나 충실해야 하는지는 여러 실용적 숙고가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 기능적 이미지 혹은 테스트 이미지로 정의할 수 있는, ‘미적인 대상을 생산하기 위한 기술적 기준으로 존재하지만 그 자체로 미적 속성을 지닌, 이미지를 위한 이미지’를 소재로 삼아 다양한 참조적 방식으로 만들어진 디자인 작업물에 관해 알아본다. 그 과정에서 기능주의의 역사적 연원이 배태하고 있는 참조적이고 모방적인 측면, 기능과 아름다움이 관계맺는 방식의 탐구를 통해 기능을 지정하는 의도에 논리적으로 포함될 수 밖에 없는 가변성과 확장성, 기능적 아름다움에 내재한 표준적·가변적·비표준적 속성, 참조적 창작 방식의 범용성과 그와 관련된 예시를 알아본다. 그리고 기능적 이미지를 참조적으로 사용한 작업물 6가지를 활용 방식에 따라 서술한다. 기능적 조형을 미적으로 활용하는 첫 번째 사례, 복수의 시각적 창작 방식을 결합하는 두 번째 사례, 시각적 창작의 기본 단위로서 기능적 이미지를 복합적으로 활용하는 세 번째 사례, 시각적 은유와 텍스트의 함축적 표현으로서 네 번째와 다섯 번째 사례, 마지막으로 기능적 이미지를 작업의 비평적 도구로 삼아 작업세계를 확장하는 여섯 번째 사례 순으로 서술해본다.
