Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the process in which African-Americans establish their own identity based on a firm sense of community in August Wilson’s Jitney. This study analyzes the way in which African-Americans whose job is driving jitneys struggle to maintain their community and identity. In a crisis of an urban renewal, the jitney drivers strengthen their identity through their sense of community. This is the kind of attitude that African-Americans should pursue in their lives. Through this play, Wilson emphasized that the African-Americans should maintain their own cultural heritage in the American society. Based on this study, it is expected that we can reach a meaningful conclusion on how Wilson’s expectations are portrayed in the follow-up study of Wilson’s other plays.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

어거스트 윌슨의 『지트니』에 나타난 아프리카계 미국인들의공동체 의식과 정체성 확립*여 은 혜**

연구 목적: 이 연구는 아프리카계 미국인들이 견고한 공동체 의식을 바탕으로 고유한 정체성을 확립해 나가는 과정을 어거스트 윌슨의 『지트니』라는 작품을 통해서 분석하는 데 목적을 두었다.
연구 방법: 본 연구는 지트니 운전을 하는 아프리카계 미국인들이 자신들의 공동체와 정체성을 지키기 위해서 고군분투하는 모습을 분석한다.
연구 내용: 도시 재개발이라는 위기 상황 속에서 지트니 운전자들은 공동체 의식을 발휘해서 정체성을 견고히 한다. 이러한 모습이 아프리카계 미국인들이 삶에서 지향해야 하는 바이다.
결론 및 제언: 『지트니』를 통해서 윌슨은 아프리카계 미국인들이 미국 사회에서 자신들의 고유한 문화유산과 정체성을 지키면서 살아가야 함을 강조한다. 본 논문을 바탕으로 이어지는 후속연구에서는 이러한 윌슨의 사회적인 기대가 어떻게 다른 작품에서도 그려지는 지를 분석하면 유의미한 결과를 낳을 것으로 예상한다.
