울프의 적합한 충족감 견해와 덕의 의무 = Wolf’s Fitting Fulfillment View and Duties of Virtue

According to Susan Wolf, a proper understanding of the concept of good life requires us to consider meaningful life as the third dimension of the good life, as distinct from both happy life and moral life. And she defends what she calls ‘the Fitting Fulfillment View’. On this view, one can live a meaningful life if the following three conditions are satisfied. The first is the fulfillment condition, according to which one should engage in works from which one can find fulfillment. The second is the objective value condition, according to which those works from which one finds fulfillment must have objective or subject-independent values. The third is the achievement condition, according to which one should make an achievement about those works to a significant extent. The goal of this paper is twofold. The first goal is to criticize Wolf’s view. For this purpose, I make three criticisms. First, the fulfillment condition is not necessary for having a good life. Second, the achievement condition is not necessary for a meaningful life, or an insubstantial condition. Third, Wolf’s view can hardly satisfy the adequacy conditions for a theory of the good life. The second goal of this paper is to offer an objectivist account of the good life on the basis of Kant’s view about the duties of virtue. On this Kantian account, a good life should not be too immoral to an unacceptable extent. Nor should it be unhappy to the extent that one’s basic human needs cannot be fulfilled in a rational manner. When one is free of these disqualifying conditions, whether one’s life is good can be evaluated by considering how much one’s duties of virtue are fulfilled.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

수전 울프에 따르면 좋은 삶의 개념을 적절히 이해하기 위해서는 행복한 삶과 도덕적 삶과 구분되는 의미 있는 삶이라는 세 번째 차원을 고려해야 한다. 그리고 그녀는 이른바 ‘적합한 충족감 견해’를 옹호한다. 이 견해에 따르면 의미 있는 삶을 살기 위해서는 세 가지 조건이 충족돼야 한다. 첫 번째 조건은 충족감 조건이다. 주체는 충족감을 느낄 수 있는 일을 해야 한다. 두 번째 조건은 객관적 가치 조건이다. 주체가 하는 그 일은 객관적 또는 주관 독립적 가치가 있어야 한다. 세 번째 조건은 성취 조건이다. 주체는 자신이 하는 그 일에 대해 적어도 어느 정도 긍정적 성취를 할 수 있어야 한다. 이 논문의 목적은 두 가지이다. 첫 번째 목적은 좋은 삶에 관한 울프의 견해를 비판하는 것이다. 이와 관련해 세 가지 비판을 제시한다. 첫째, 충족감 조건은 좋은 삶의 필요조건이 아니다. 둘째, 성취 조건은 의미 있는 삶의 필요조건이 아니거나 유명무실한 조건에 불과하다. 셋째, 울프의 견해는 좋은 삶에 관한 이론이 충족해야 할 적절성 조건들을 충족하기 어렵다. 이 논문의 두 번째 목적은 덕의 의무에 관한 칸트의 견해를 토대로 좋은 삶에 관한 객관주의 이론을 대안으로 제시하는 것이다. 이 칸트적 견해에 따르면, 좋은 삶은 용납하기 어려울 정도로 비도덕적인 삶이어서도 안 되고, 또한 인간의 기본적 욕구들을 적절히 충족하지 못할 정도로 불행한 삶이어서는 안 된다. 그러한 결격사유가 없는 경우에 한 사람의 삶이 좋은 삶인지 여부는 덕의 의무에 잘 부합한 삶이었는지에 의해 평가할 수 있다.
