고통의 종교적 의미 형성을 위한 전환학습 = Transformative Learning for Religious Meaning-making of Suffering

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 사회를 비롯해 전 세계적으로 일어나는 대형참사, 테러, 전쟁 등으로 인해 무고한 사람들이 고통 받는 현실은 동시대인들의 반성과 책임 있는 행동을 요청한다. 사회구조적 악으로 인해 발생하는 고통의 문제에 무감각하고 무관심하면 비극적인 사건들은 계속 반복될 것이다. 인간의 이성으로 이해하기 힘든 고통을 하나님의 정당성과 인간의 불가해성으로 설명해 온 전통적인 신정론과는 달리 정치신학, 해방신학, 과정신학, 세월호 이후 한국신학은 사회악으로 인해 무고하게 고통 받는 자들과 함께 고통당하고 불의한 고통에 저항하며 함께 싸우는 정의와 연민의 하나님을 강조한다. 이 논문은 이러한 신학적 성찰을 토대로 한국 사회가 직면한 고통의 실체를 정직하게 대면하고, 그 고통의 의미를 주체적으로 형성하고, 고통의 원인이 되는 사회악을 극복하기 위해 개인과 사회적 차원에서 삶의 전환이 일어나도록 돕는 전환학습(transformative learning)을 제시하고 있다. 전환학습은 네 과정으로 나뉘는데, 먼저 고통에 무감각하고 무관심한 사람들의 의식을 깨워 사회에 내재 되어 있는 고통의 실체에 대해 주체적으로 인식하도록 한다. 두 번째는 무비판적으로 내면화해온 전통적인 종교적 해석의 내용과 그 의미가 형성된 과정과 신학적 전제에 대한 질문들을 통해 기존의 의미들을 비판적으로 성찰하도 록 한다. 세 번째는 비판적 성찰로 해체된 의미를 공동체 안에서 합리적 담화의 과정을 통해 재형성하고, 고통 받는 이들과의 공감적 연대를 형성하도록 한다. 마지막으로 고통의 종교적 의미관점을 재형성하고 그 의미의 행위주체로서 미래의 행동을 전환하도록 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Tragic incidents, terrors and wars involving many innocent victims underline the need for Christians to reflect upon their moral responsibilities and take action. If people continue to be apathetic and numb to the human suffering caused by systemic evil, similar tragedies can continue to occur and any individual in this society can be a potential victim or apathetic accomplice. Unlike traditional theodicy that has stressed God’s legitimacy and inability of the humans to understand suffering, political theology, liberation theology, process theology, and Korean theology after the tragedy of ferry Sewol have developed the idea of a ‘suffering God’ with human and a ‘liberating God’ who wants to liberate suffering people. Based on these theological understandings, this article explores a transformative learning method that helps Christians become more aware of the reality of suffering caused by social evil, critically reflect the multi-layered structure of it and previous understandings of suffering, and transform suffering situation through new meaning-making and action. Transformative learning starts from confronting the reality of suffering, by awakening from apathy or numbness. Secondly, for mature transformation to occur, there must be a conscious and critical reflection on previous religious assumptions and interpretations about suffering. Critical reflection begins with critical questioning about pre-existing beliefs, values, assumptions, and perspectives. Thirdly, learners may reconstruct the meaning of suffering through rational discourse in a trusted community of faith and build empathic solidarity with those who suffer. Finally, meaning-making process of suffering should not end in hermeneutic work, but should force people to make a commitment to take action to eliminate suffering. The Christian meaning-making process demands the realization of vocation and practical action.
