The study deals with motivations and activities of those who participated in African-American freedmen’s education in the South during and after the Civil War. First, federal officials regarded freedmen’s education as the key to successful ‘reconstruction’ of the South in the mold of northern free-labor system. The Army hired teachers to teach the freedmen in ‘contraband camps.’ The Freedmen’s Bureau launched education programs to help the freedmen in their transition from slavery to freedom. Second, white and black, male and female northern teachers came to the South, believing that their teaching could contribute to cleansing of the national ‘sin’ of allowing slavery. Sponsored by such northern abolitionist benevolent societies as the American Missionary Association, the teachers committed themselves to making the freedmen literate, piet, and industrious. Last, the freedmen themselves made big efforts to educate their children and themselves. Literacy was an antithesis of slavery to them. They had the expectation that education would open the upward way to economic and social mobility.
However, there were many obstacles to freedmen’s education. Teachers were always wanting. There were under-qualified teachers, too. The northern teachers suffered from unfriendly southern climate and poor school-facilities. The lack of fund also limited educational programs. Severly hostile to freedmen’s education and to northern ‘invaders,’ southern whites often imposed threat to the teachers and even burned school buildings. Racist attitudes of northern white teachers and officials toward black ‘colleague’ teachers hampered the teachers’ solidarity. Nevertheless, the educational movement for the freedmen in the 1860s contributed to building the precious experience of self-help among the southern African Americans and to providing teachers among themselves for the next generations.
