The film art is constantly changing and innovating. Among them, the documentary film, as a type of realistic film, has developed into a new type by combining it with the form of animation. “The sinking of the Lusitania” by Winsor McCay in 1918 showed the characteristics of this theme for the first time. “Waltz With Bashir”, released in 2008, officially began to attract public attention. “Waltz With Bashir”, known as animated documentary and other genres, has achieved good results in many international competitions and has become an active subject of discussion in the academic community, but so far the theory of performance devices is still insufficient. Therefore, this study is based on Bill Nichols’ Performative Documentary theory, combined with the characteristics of cartoons, and analyzes the performance device of cartoons. This paper discusses how to expand the authenticity of animation documentaries through performance while maintaining the record.
Unlike traditional documentaries that reproduce the historical world through live images, animated documentaries are completed through the recording and expressiveness of animated films. In this process, the creator can not only design characters and scenes in various animation styles according to the material, but also present historical events that cannot be actually photographed in the picture.
In the work “Flee”, the director shuttles freely between objective recording and subjective performance. Insert a live video that provides true testimony, reproduce objective events, and show the subjective world of the heart through irony techniques.
To sum up, since cartoons were introduced into film production as a device, the perspective of documentaries has become more and more diverse, which allows the audience to use the emotions of real experience to participate in historical events.
