The idea for health originated with Hippocrates (B.C. 459 377). In old days, it was emphasized that health was merely a complete state of physical function and absence of disease.
W.H.O. (World Health Organization) defined health as follows in 1948. "Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
Health was developed from personal hygiene to community health by socialization and collectivization of human beings.
C.E.A. Winslow defined public health as follows. "Public health is the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting physical and mental efficiency through organized community effort." Public health is also called social medicine or preventive medicine.
There were heredity and environment as a factor of controlling health. Heredity is congenital factor and controls a state of individual health. Environment is acquired factor and they are natural, biological, cultural and social factors.
