  In the dark ages when ignorance brooded like a thick cloud o'er the human mind, and learning and all its attendant blessings were confined to the favored few, a belief in the personality of devils would not seem at all surprising; but now in the nineteenth century, when science is shedding its bright and enlivening rays over the larger part of the habitable globe, and when knowledge seems to unfold mysteries that have been hid for ages, clearing away the clouds of superstition and bigotry, from the mental zon--giving sight to the spiritually blind and hearing to the deaf--it would seem that no one could still remain without a reasonable knowledge, at least, of the subject of devils.
