Biocentrism ethics resulted from reflection on anthropocentristic environmental ethics and it recognized the natural value. And it changed fundamental value system in the relationship between human beings and the nature. Due to anthropocentrism, human beings had justified their rule over the nature. However, today their material affluence and benefits have resulted in ecosystem crisis beyond the loss of self purification.
The goal of this paper is to explore various arguments for biocentristic environmental ethics and their possibility. For this, we tried reflective approaches to real ecosystem and environmental crisis and discussed the history and problems of environmental ethics.
As environmental problems have resulted from complex sources, we need to review totally in terms of politics, economy, society and philosophy to solve the problems. Among them, we focused on philosophical approach, which was very important to solve them. And then we examined the basic hypothesis of teleological and deontological ethics, which were the major theories in ethics, and we considered them in connection with environmental problems.
Most of environmental ethicists classified environmental ethics into anthropocentrism, patheticism, biocentrism, holism ethics, which were decided by whether a natural being had independent and intrinsic value beyond other beings' values. Among them, biocentristic environmental ethics claims that all living things have their intrinsic values. Recognizing that living things have the values is respecting the nature. The thoughts that all living things have their inherent good mean that we can improve and protect other living things' good.
The environmental ethics includes various problems; Firstly, theoretical problem is about who has moral obligation, duty and right. Secondly, the next problems are about the practical things; Ethical responsibility for the future generation, moral standing of other species except human beings, moral priority among the species, distribution of natural resources from generation to generation, variety of species and population. They are environmental ethicists' common concerns.
We need to try to increase our interests in environment, to discuss actively environmental problem and to seek for biocentristic environmental ethics in order to establish the right environmental ethics. In addition, we have to carry out life-long education for which home, school, civic group and press should be organically connected to one another. Especially, we should not follow the problem awareness and solutions of Western Europe or advanced countries but on the basis of them, we should have our own viewpoint on nature, which is based on biocentristic environmental ethics. If we do so, we may live with humble and modest attitude for the nature through biocentristic environmental ethics, which is human beings' attitude for nature and their ethical foundation.
