야담 속 역관 인물형과 돈에 관한 문제의식 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 조선후기 남다른 부를 축적하며 후대에 상업자본가나 대부자본가의 모습으로 유형화된 역관에 주목해서, 당대 사람들이 자본이라 할 수 있는 거대한 돈을 어떻게 인식하고자 했으며 자신들의 삶과 사회에 이를 어떻게 연관짓고자 했는지 야담을 통해 살펴보았다.
야담에서 유형화되어 전승되는 역관 인물형은 보물을 발견하여 부자가 된 이화종, 대가 없는 증여로 보은을 받은 홍순언, 지감력 있는 조선 갑부 변씨, 로비의 대가로 운남 미인을 얻은 김역관, 유능하고 자상한 아버지 김령으로 나누어 볼 수 있었다.
초기 역관 이야기의 초점은 부자 되기에 있었다. 특히 사행 길에 보물을 얻어 부자가 되는 이야기는 용주라는 신성한 가치와 세속적인 시장의 돈이 교환되면서 발생하는 사회적 문제와 사람들의 변화, 세태에 대해 고민해 보게 하였다. 이야기 세계는 이화종이라는 강력한 인물 상징을 통해 막대한 자본의 기원을 하늘이 준 선물로 천명하거나 탐욕스럽게 되지 않도록 예를 갖춤으로써 스스로를 경계하고자 했다.
홍순언은 상징적인 가치조차 물화되는 세상에서 역관이 대가를 바라지 않고 자기희생적인 증여를 실천함으로써 개인을 넘어 국가 간 상호 존중과 동맹 관계까지 회복시킨 힘을 보여주었다. 조선 사회는 홍순언 이야기를 역사로 인식하면서까지 그 인물상을 이상화했는데, 막대한 자본을 운용하는 신흥 자본가가 순수증여로 공동체에 감동과 희망을 주었다는 의의도 있다.
조선 갑부 변씨는 당대 사회의 문제를 꿰뚫는 이인 허생의 비판을 경청하는 인물로 그려지는데, 허생이 지닌 부자와 돈에 관한 인식은 보물의 교환에서 탐욕을 경계한 이화종･순수증여를 실천한 홍순언 이야기의 주제와 연결되고 있어서, 자본과 시장의 발달 과정 속에서도 야담 향유층이 지닌 역관･자본에 관한 사회적 인식과 지향은 역관 이야기 초기부터 동일하게 지속되었음을 알 수 있다.
19세기 후반 야담집에 실린 운남 공주를 아내로 맞은 김역관이나 청상과부 딸을 개가시킨 김령은 역관의 개인적 삶에 대한 상상이 문학적으로 형상화된 작품으로, 역관은 다른 사람들의 마음을 움직여 조화롭게 일을 도모하는 남다른 문제해결 능력을 보여준다. 또한 김역관이 천하제일미와 가정을 이루기 위해 부리는 남다른 사치가 야단스럽지 않게 언급되거나, 김령이 채생의 가족과 가까워지는 과정에서 풍요로움이 감각적으로 경험되며 삶에 미치는 긍정성이 부각되듯이 이 작품들에서는 역관으로 연상되는 막대한 재산과 호화로운 소비에 대한 향유층의 반응을 세련되게 유도하고 있다. 이들은 신분과 규범을 가로지르는 새로운 사회적･개인적 욕망을 반영하여 활약하는 주인공이자 다정하게 소통하고 유능하게 문제를 해결하는 매력적인 인물로 창출되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The paper examines the attention given to interpreters, who were typified as commercial capitalists or plutocrats in later Joseon Dynasty narratives(Yadam), amassing extraordinary wealth, and explores how people of that era perceived vast wealth and sought to relate it to their own lives and society through Yadam In Yadam, the typified figures transmitted and stylized include Lee Hwa-jong, who became wealthy by discovering treasure; Hong Soon-eon, who received favors without expectation of compensation through pure donation; a wealthy Joseon magnate Mr. Byeon; Interpreter Kim, who obtained a beautiful woman from Yunnan through lobbying; and Kim Ryeong, a competent and kind father.
The initial focus of Yadam about interpreters was on becoming wealthy. Particularly, stories of obtaining treasure through diplomatic routes to China raised societal issues stemming from the exchange of divine values and worldly money in the market, prompting reflections on societal changes. Through the powerful character symbol of Lee Hwa-jong, the story world tried to guard itself by declaring the origin of the enormous capital as a gift from heaven or by being polite not to become greedy.
In a world where even symbolic values are commodified, Hong Soon-eon demonstrated the power of an interpreter to restore mutual respect and alliance relationships beyond individuals and between countries by practicing self-sacrificing donations without expecting anything in return. Joseon society even recognized the story of Hong Soon-eon as historical and idealized the character. However, there is also significance in the fact that an emerging capitalist, managing a huge amount of capital, infused emotion and hope into the community through pure gift.
Mr. Byeon, a wealthy man of the Joseon Dynasty, is portrayed as a person who listens to the criticism of Heo Saeng, a man who understands the problems of the society of the time. Heo Saeng's perception of the rich and money is similar to the stories of Lee Hwa-jong, who was wary of greed in the exchange of treasures, and Hong Soon-eon, who practiced pure gifting. Even during the development of capital and the market, it can be seen that the social awareness and orientation regarding interpreters and capital held by those who enjoy Yadam have remained the same since the beginning of the interpreter story.
In the late 19th century, two more interpreter characters appeared. The stories of Kim, a young interpreter who took a Yunnan princess as his wife, and Kim Ryeong, another character who hoped that his widowed daughter would marry again, are literary works that well express the imagination of the translator's private life. Here, the interpreter shows an extraordinary problem-solving ability that moves the minds of others to work harmoniously. In these works, the reactions of the enjoyment class to the enormous wealth and luxurious consumption that are associated with the interpreter are sophisticatedly elicited. They were created as protagonists who reflect new social and personal desires that cut across status and norms, and as attractive characters who communicate affectionately and solve problems competently.
