      The present paper provides a description and analysis of the ways in which verbal art and linguistic creativity may spontaneously arise or be consciously constructed and practiced in sales transaction discourse at urban market places in Korea and Japan. The proposed analysis is conducted within the framework of the ethnography of communication, where an urban market place represents a single speech community, possessing both universal and specific features of linguistic communication. In order to fulfill the purpose of the present research, the author collected a variety of discourse data and classified them into three discourse patterns: Vendor-Call, Vendor-Performance, Vendor-Customer Communication, and provided a detailed description of language use for Vendor-Call, comparing to other discourse patterns based on the SPEAKING model proposed by Hymes. In particular, in order to clarify the features of the Vendor-Call in the urban market place as a functional speech community, this research provides a detailed analysis of lexical choices, syntactic constructions, and discourse structures and managements on the vendor-Call discourse from a contrastive prospective. Finally, this study elucidates the linguistic creativity of vendors at the urban market places in Korea and Japan, with the focus on verbal art and poetic creativity heightened through repetition and parallelism in Vendor-Call.
