Interpretation of Freud’s Pyschoanalysis: Foucault vs. Derrida on Freud

Foucault includes Freud in his criticism of the modern psychiatry, though he givesFreud a little credit for Freud’s resisting the positivistic approaches of theneuropsychiatry. This paper tries to rescue Freud from this kind of negative views ofFreudian psychoanalysis based on Freudian view of the dream, specifically,his view of the navel of the dream. Freud’s denial of complete interpretation of dreams and symptoms converges with Derrida’s refusal of definite fixation of meaning and endless interpretability of texts. Freud’s open-minded and non-linear attitude is indicatedin his view of the navel of the dream, “a tangle of dream-thoughts which cannot be unraveled and which moreover adds nothing to our knowledge of the content of thedream, the spot where it reaches down into the unknown.” In his earlier response to Freud Derrida issimilar toFoucault in criticizing Freud’s theoretical thoughts to bemechanical and linear, butlater Derrida recognizes Freudian openmindednessin his commandingpsychoanalytic thoughts as truthfulways to search for the truth. The open-endedness of the beyond thepleasure principle of Freud draws the attention of such Derrideandeconstructionist as Samuel Weber who places Freud and Derridaas allies. Weberregards Freudian navel of the dream as Thallus,the open-ended structure of a plantwith no center, contrastingit with Lacan’s Phallus indirectly implying some kind of acenter. In conclusion, Freud’s open-endedness of the death drive makesFreud andDerrida as allies as reflected in Derrida's praise of thedeath drive.
