An experimental study was conducted in order to understand the characteristics of coolant flow rate according to the coolant temperature and pressure in a 2L class gasoline engine. The research engine was run by the electric motor without firing. The temperature of the coolant was adjusted by a temperature controller with an electric heater, while the system pressure was set by an external air compressor Coolant flow rate was increased with increased engine speed. On the other hand, increasing rate of coolant flow rate at low system pressure was low due to occurrence of cavitation. Thermostat began to open at 82.. coolant temperature and coolant firstly flowed into the oil cooler. With increased coolant temperature, coolant flow rates in the oil cooler and radiator were increased due to widening thermostat opening area.
