This study sought to find out the factors that affect local residents' intention to use online local newspapers and to examine the audience's online newspaper use behavior, focusing on local demographic attributes, various benefits, and migration intentions to other regions. To this end, a survey was conducted on 300 men and women aged 18 or older living in Daegu Metropolitan City in parallel with telephone interviews and on-site interviews.
The study set a total of five goals. First, in order to understand the local news (news) contact method, we looked at the local news contact method through local portal sites, local media websites, and apps, and tried to identify their important factors when selecting news articles. The study found that 97% of the study's participants encountered local news (news) through the first screen of portal site news, portal site news subscription, or search.
The second is to collect basic information that can provide news articles specialized to individual local residents in a feature form in online newspapers by examining the impact of local demographic variables on their interest in specific news. The study found that employment-related news has a significant relationship in all demographic variables except for jobs in education-related news, and monthly income in online game-related articles, except for the gender of participants. On the other hand, in articles related to childcare and pets, only gender and age were found to have statistically significant relationships, and in articles related to local attractions, only jobs were found to have a statistically significant relationship.
The third goal of this study is to find the most efficient method among practical methods to expand the contact surface of local residents' online local newspapers through empirical evidence. To this end, this study identified local residents' intentions on three methods: signing up for membership on the online local newspaper website, subscribing to local newspapers on portal sites, and installing local newspaper applications on mobile phones on the condition of providing benefits. As a result, the installation of mobile phone local newspaper apps showed a relatively high willingness compared to the other two methods.
The fourth goal was to understand the relationship between local residents' future residence (or migration to other regions) and the reason for migration and their desire for local news (news). Studies have shown that unstable income and jobs have significant relationships with employment-related and online game-related articles. In the case of lack of cultural facilities, there was a significant relationship with articles related to childcare, and the lack of development potential was significant with articles related to employment. Unstable income, intention to move to other regions due to jobs, and no possibility of development were directly related to the livelihood of local residents, so there was a high interest in information needs, that is, employment-related articles.
The fifth goal of this study was to find out the differences in the news genre of interest between groups that still want to migrate despite eliminating various causes of migration to other regions, groups that choose to live instead of migration when the cause of migration is eliminated. As a result of the study, in order to develop and provide news content of a specific genre, it is necessary to establish a system that can first distinguish between local residents who plan and wish to move outside Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do province.
This study aimed to understand the local news usage behavior of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do province residents from a receptive point of view, and to find its own academic and practical value in that it collected basic information for the production of news content that meets the news consumption needs of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do province residents.
In addition, we would like to find practical significance in terms of empirically exploring the aspect of expanding the possibility of contact with online local newspapers through the provision of specific benefits that have not been implemented at all in existing studies. In particular, the discovery of how the intention to live in the community or move to another region, and furthermore, the cause of the migration plan to other regions, has important implications in terms of the long-term perspective and the role of the local media.
