The purpose of this paper is to examine the current status of the operation of language responsibilities in the Chungcheong area and to seek ways to revitalize the operation of language responsibilities. Currently, 65 institutions in the Chungcheong area have designated language responsibilities, and all of them have concurrent positions in addition to the Korean language responsibilities. In addition, Chungcheong region governments' projects to promote the Korean language include investigating and improving the language status of public institutions, conducting education to strengthen public officials' capacity to improve public language, supervising ordinances, public documents and press releases, and promoting residents using newsletters.
In order for the Korean language officer system to be activated, a department in charge of Korean language policy-related affairs, such as public language improvement, should be established first. It is also necessary to introduce a Korean language officer system to complement the professionalism of the Korean language officer. The appointment of a Korean language officer should be specified in the Framework Act on the Korean Language in order to provide legal support for the introduction of the Korean language officer system. In addition, education that can actually help the Korean language officer should be provided, and sufficient budget should be secured to support the Korean language officer to carry out the policy, and the reward based on the evaluation results should be expanded. Legal, administrative, and financial support must be provided for the Korean language officer system, which is currently being formally operated, to play its role.
