독립운동과 민주공화주의 이념 = Independence Movement and Democratic Republicanism

The main purpose of this paper is to reveal the philosophy of Korean Independence Movement by way of research it``s reason to adopt the western democratic republicanism. 3.1 Independence Proclamation which was pressed at Seoul by names of 33 patriotics including ByongHi Son, YongUn Han contained only the clues of democratic republicanism. But the Provisional Government of Republic of Korea which was established about one month later at Shanghai, China declare the democratic republicanism overtly. It is a big difference to be explained in terms of the philosophy of Korean Independence Movement. Maybe the reasons why were related that 3.1 Independence Proclamation was held in domestic and the establishment of the Provisional Government of Republic of Korea was in abroad. But, I think, it goes beyond them. The adoption of democratic republicanism by the Korean patriotics in 1919 was not a simple follow-up the Western advanced countries likewise America, England and the Weimar Republic, or a mere reflection of Chinese Revolution in 1911 which had overthrown the last Manchu Emperor and established the first Republic in China. The democratic republicanism played 3 keyroles in the history of Korean Independence Movement in philosophical perspective. First, it was the only way to justify the Independence Movement in the circumstance of Japanese imperialism and to establish the Provisional Government of Republic of Korea. Second, it signified to raise the 3.1 Independence Movement as a modern civil revolution which had challenged the whole system of Korean feudal society and the imperialistic international political arena. Third, it empowered the ordinary people of Korea who was suffering severe ordeals and torments, as an active agent to make and develop new country in a modern sense. Therefore we can say through the 3.1 Independence Movement the authentic Modern era opened in Korea.
