As symbols become language and develop into letters, people try to engrave them on all things. This phenomenon also affects crafts, as found in relics with texts engraved on textiles, sculptures, paintings, and ceramics. The texts engraved on these crafts were regarded as a pattern and named text patterns to carry out this study.
The act of engraving something begins for the purpose of recording, but it is close to simple symbols until letters are created. After, with the development of letters and language, many texts were written to record all events and leave them to descendants. Many literary works were gradually left as literary arts and literature developed, and even letters themselves were used as patterns. In addition, the text patterns engraved on crafts have expanded in content and purpose to trademarks, decorations, origins, etc., including records of original characters.
As such, research on text patterns with legibility, decorativeness, and recordability was determined to have a high value, but not much research on text patterns has been carried out. This study examined and reinterpreted text patterns with various concepts to produce works by conducting three studies.
First, this study organized and examined the text patterns of the relics engraved by categorizing them into types and engrave techniques. The types of text patterns were largely divided into the management of ceramic vessels, records to be left in the future, decoration as patterns, and auspicious items to wish for luck. Engrave techniques of text patterns are largely divided into sculpture and painting techniques.
Second, the study reviewed the definition and concept of text patterns used by contemporary artists by examining the examples of contemporary works, which were divided into paintings and sculptures.
Third, the engrave technique was experimented and studied to produce the work by largely dividing it into sculpture and coloring, with the goal to find suitable tools and materials during this process. By studying variously engraved text patterns, the work of ‘archive’ form was produced using the legibility and decorativeness of text patterns. By conducting the previous three studies, the work was produced with suitable tools and materials.
The study judged that text patterns today were not actively used as ceramic decorations due to direct and strong patterns. However, it is hoped this study presented the possibility of applying text patterns as a ceramic decoration and expanding the range of applications. Finally, it is hoped that the value of research on text patterns will become widely known so many more studies are conducted.
