극동선수권대회의 창시자 E. S. 브라운의 체육 생애사 = A Study on the Athletic Life History of E. S. Brown, the Founder of the Far Eastern Championship Games

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 아시안게임의 전신으로 인정받고 있는 극동선수권대회의 창시자 E. S. 브라운의 체육 생애사를 살펴보았다. 1910년대발행된 보고서와 신문 기사 등의 1차 사료에 대한 문헌분석법을 통해 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 브라운은 1883년 4월9일에 침례교 목사의 4남 1녀 중 넷째 아들로 태어났으며, 1902년 아홉 살의 어린 나이에 YMCA 정식 회원가입으로 YMCA 와의 인연이 시작되었다. 둘째, 그의 체육 생애는 솔트레이크 YMCA 체육 강사로 활동한 제1기(1906-1909), 필리핀 마닐라YMCA에서 학교체육 보급사업과 PAAF 그리고 FEOA 설립을 주도한 제2기(1910-1917), 셋째, 제2차 세계대전 이후 유럽의다국적 군인들을 위한 체육대회인 IAGs을 창설한 제3기(1918-1920)로 크게 나누어진다. 이처럼 E. S. 브라운의 체육 생애는YMCA의 기독교적 복음주의에 의한 문명화에 토대를 두고 동아시아 근대체육의 발전에 중요한 토대를 마련하였다는 역사적의미를 지니고 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the athletic life history of E. S. Brown, the founder of the Far East Championships, who is recognized as the forerunner of the Asian Games today. The results were as follows: A literature analysis was conducted using primary historical records such as reports and newspaper articles published in the 1910s. First, Brown was born on April 9, 1883, the fourth son of four sons and one daughter of a minister of the Baptist church, and his relationship with the YMCA began in 1902, when he joined the YMCA at the tender age of nine. Second, his athletic career can be divided into three categories: the first period (1906-1909), Salt Lake YMCA physical education instructor; the second period (1910-1917), which led the school sports supply project and the creation of PAAF and FEOA at the YMCA in Manila, Philippines, and finally, the third period (1918-1920), which created the IAGs, a sports competition for multinational soldiers in Europe after World War II. As such, E. S. Brown's athletic life was based on the civilization of the YMCA through Christian evangelism and laid an essential foundation for the development of modern sports in East Asia.
