Considering the purpose of business education, it would be beneficial to provide students with opporunities to look into various activities and dynamic changes of corporations. However, textbooks are main educational material in classes and there are limitations in using textbooks as major teaching and learning tool: a textbook includes concentrated information within the limited pages and cannot be fixed or updated following the recent changes in the field.
In addition, the delivery of knowledge is based on textbooks used by teachers these days and this is not sufficient to maximize the effect of business education. Therefore, it is necessary to develop diverse educational materials for business education and provide students with opportunities to learn about constantly changing environments along with internal and external activities of corporations. This research explores the performance of Newspapers In Education, NIE, as a suggestive learning tool for business education with its versatile usage, analyzing its effect on education performance evaluation results and study attitude of students.
The main objective of this research is to analyze the effects of using NIE in business education, concerning changes in performance evaluation results and study attitude of students. For this purpose, an actual teaching-learning scheme was developed and suggested using selected contents of newspapers related to “enterprise and management” chapter.
The subjects were 142 twelfth graders in 4 classrooms (2 classes of good academic performance and 2 classes of bad academic performance) from a high school of commerce in Anseong. The participant group was randomly assigned to the experiment and the control group.
Each group received two different types of business education on the same topic of corporate social responsibility and ethics through two sessions run by the researcher. The experiment group was assigned to a teaching-learning scheme utilizing newspapers as an educational material. The control group was exposed to a teaching-learning process mainly focused on textbook materials. After the experiment, the analysis was performed on the difference in the educational evaluation results and study attitudes of students between the two groups.
The results indicated that the experiment group members both from the good and the bad performance classes showed higher average scores in all than the control group members and there were statistical differences in evaluation results.
This analysis result has proved the validity of the hypothesis that NIE applied instruction sessions have more positive effectiveness in educational achievement results through four test sections of Knowledge, Comprehension, Appreciation and Attitude.
Secondly, in the Attitude section the experiment group showed higher average scores for all of the four sub-tests, Interests and learning motivations, Perceptions of involvements, Conceptual understandings, and Course satisfaction. There were statistical differences between the experiment and the control groups and it showed the effect of NIE applied instruction method.
Thirdly, there was no significant difference in statistics between the test results of the good and the bad performance class students in the same experiment group exposed to NIE during the test. Also the overall Attitude test result showed lower average score for the good performance class students but the difference was not statistically significant. Therefore, there was no difference in the educational achievement between the good and the bad performance groups.
As a result, NIE using instruction method can have effectiveness and benefits on business class in high school of commerce. But it appears that the current business education class in commerce high school does not yet show systematic approach for utilizing NIE as an educational tool.
The performance of NIE as a business education tool in commerce high school can be influenced by teachers’ attitudes toward it. That is, their recognition of NIE and their instruction method using it affect quality of the education, student involvement, and educational achievement through NIE.
Considering the purpose of Commerce course, not only to improve students’ ability and attitude to contribute to corporations activities and national economic developments but also to develop valuable human resources for the upcoming age of globalization and information, consistent study and endeavor are needed for the development of teaching and learning methods actively utilizing NIE for business education in commerce high schools.
