의식의 상태는 일시적이고 전이적이다. 그리고 이러한 의식상태는 자연스러운 의식상태와 변성 의식상태로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 의식의 발달은 '변성의식상태-구조화-새로운 의식구조'로 변화한다. 이는 견성성불의 세 번째 관점과 유사한 구조라고 할 수 있다. 이때의 변성의식상태는 일종의 절정경험으로 초개인단계의 상태를 잠시 엿본 상태로 아직 구조화되지 않은 가변적인 상태이다. 개인의식의 정점에 도달한 의식이 초개인적 의식구조로 나아가기 위한 도약을 성취하는 것이 세 번째 관점에서의 '견성'에 대한 서구심리학적 이해라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 체험 이후에 수행을 통하여 전개되는 심령

The consciousness tends to develop gradually from altered states to a new structure by way of structuralization. This process seems similar to the third viewpoint of satori and becoming a Buddha. The altered state of consciousness is a kind of peak experience in that it is a variable one without a firm structure accompanying a glimpse of some transpersonal states.
