국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 윤이상 탄생 100주년을 위한 기념강연록이다. 그는 1969년 한국의 감옥에서 풀려나 한국에 돌아오지 못하고 독일에서 죽었는데, 고향에 돌아가지 못할 것을 각오하는 과정에 나온 작품(Memory fur drei Stimmen und Schlagzeug, 1974)의 내력과 음악을 다룬다. 이 작품은 그의 개인사와 음악의 이해에 중요한 열쇄가 된다. 개인사도 다루었지만 특히 음악에 관한 부분을 집중적으로 다루었다.
윤이상 음악의 가장 큰 특징은 [긴음]이 중심을 이루고, 그 음을 앞·뒤·중간으로 장식하는 [짧은음]들로 구성되는 것이다. Memory에서 전자는 다섯 음들(e' g' b' d'' f'')로 되어 있다. 후자는 악보에 음표로 기록되지 않고 곡선 이나 직선으로 마치 포르타멘토 기호와 유사하게 표기된다. 악보상 비음계 음을 전혀 사용하지 않는 이 음악에 작곡가는 “가능한 한 무조적으로 연주 하라”는 지시어를 사용했다. 즉 무조음악을 의도하는 것이다. 이러한 그의 무조적 작품을 똑같은 다섯 음들을 사용하지만, [짧은음] 부분을 무조적으로 기록한 다른 작품(Gagok, 1972)과 비교하여 그 작곡기법을 밝힌다. 그 기법은 다음과 같은 생각으로부터 나온다.
작곡가는 [긴음]과 주위로 번지는 [짧은음]들을 같은 음이라고 본다. 그런데 용어 ‘음’은 일정한 음높이와 상관이 있다. 반면 ‘음향’은 그렇지 않다. 윤이상은 음과 음향을 하나로 묶어 생각했고, 두 가지를 모두 묶어 ‘음’이라 칭했다. 그의 음악은 음이 생성하여 음향으로, 반대로 음향이 생성하여 음으로 진행하는 과정이다. 이 때 구성음들은 전음계적으로 또는 무조적으로 구사될 수 있다. 그의 음악에서는 음과 음향의 분리가 불가능하다. 때문에 이 글은 음과 음향을 합한 것을 음햐ㅇ이라 표기한다. 음햐ㅇ의 사고는 한국 전통음악으로부터 온 것인데, 이것이 무조적·음향적인 20세기 음악과 접목되어 윤이상 특유의 음악으로 나타난다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The vocal work < Memory for Three Voices and Percussion > by Isang Yun, written in 1974, is the core of this paper, which was commemorated on the centenary of the composer's birth.
After being released from a Korean prison in 1969, Yun lived in West Germany and did not visit his homeland until his death, because in 1974 he decided never ever return to Korea. The < Memory > contains his thoughts and inner emotions of that time, but also provides a key to his compositional style, which is mainly discussed here.
The distinctive mark of Isang Yun's music is the long-held tone(s) or sound(s), around which ornaments arise lightly or heavily. In the < Memory >, the five long notes are fixed: e', g', b', d'', f''. And only diatonic tones are notated so that ornaments are marked only as glissandi-like figures. The composer points to play "as atonal as possible". After that, the music sounds atonal, but the singers and players do not get any detailed guidelines from the composer who leaves them in aleatoric free space.
The work < Gagok, 1973 > by Yun offers some helps to play the < Memory > that was composed at about the same time. It uses the same five notes as < Memory >, but ornamentations are written as chromatic notes instead of glissandi-like ones.
His method of composition is based on this idea: The long-held tones and surrounding sounds are the one, despite different pitches. This contradicts the meaning of the “tone”, but fits better with the word “sound”. Because Yun does not distinguish between tone and sound, there is no difference between tonal, atonal, and microtonal sounds. The glissandi-like playing patterns of < Memory > contain abundant atonal and microtonal moments. So it can be played atonal or microtonal, as the composer meant.
