기원전 4세기 아테네의 대(大)판아테나이아와 운동 경기장 연구 : 공간의 분리와 확장 = The Athletic Spaces for the Greater Panathenaia in the 4^th Century B.C.E.: Separation and Integration of Civic Spaces

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 기원전 4세기에 大판아테나이아에서 열린 운동 경기를 수행된 공간에 초점을 두고 운동 경기가 시행된 아테네의 공간을 고대 지형학을 통해 고고학적으로 조망하고, 도시 공간적 측면에서 大판아테나이아를 위한 경기장의 공간과 위치가 분리되고 확장하는 현상을 고찰하고자 한다. 大판아테네아이아 운동 경기가 열린 공간은 주경기장의 역할을 한 아고라, 기원전 330년경부터 등장하는 스타디온, 횃불 경주가 열리는 아카데미아에서 아고라에 이르는 공간, 마상경기가 열린 경마장, 사로니코스 만에 있던 해상 경기장이 해당된다. 도시의 북서쪽의 아카데미아와 도시의 남서쪽에 이르는 사로니코스 만에 있는 항구와 해상까지 경기장으로 활용하면서 도시 전체가 운동 경기라는 이벤트를 위한 스포츠 콤플렉스로 기능하였다.
大판아테나이아 운동경기는 아테네 외부 출신의 선수들을 위한 경기가 아고라-스타디온을 중심으로 치러졌고, 아테네 출신의 선수들을 위한 경기는 아카데미아-아고라-스타디온-사로니코스 만에 이르는 넓은 지역에서 치러진 차이가 보인다. 이를 통해 방문객에게 아테네의 곳곳에 위치한 유산을 선보이려는 목적과 더불어 아카데미아나 사로니코스 만의 해안 지역과 같은 도시의 주변부에 축제의 분위기를 불어넣음으로써 시민적 공동체 의식을 강화하는 효과를 기대할 수 있었다. 이것은 대형 스포츠 이벤트의 공간이 한 곳의 경기장에 한정되지 않고 여럿의 경기장으로 확장되면서 축제를 통한 사회 통합이 시도되는 현대적인 현상이 고대 아테네의 도시 공간에서도 벌어졌음을 확인시켜준다. 하지만 고대 아테네에서는 범그리스적 축제로서의 大판아테나이아 운동 경기는 시민과 타지역 출신 선수들의 경기 종목이 벌어진 공간을 달리함으로써 도시 공간에서 차별화된 효과를 의도하였다는 점에서 특기할 만하다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to provide an archeological and ancient topographical view of the Athenian spaces in the Greater Panathenaia in which athletic games were performed in the late 4^th century BCE. In addition, this study explores the phenomena of separation and integration of the athletic spaces and locations for the Greater Panathenaia from the perspective of civic spaces.
The venues where the Greater Panathenaia athletic games were held include Agora, which served as the main stadium, the Panathenaic Stadion, which appeared around 330 B.C.E., the space from the Academy to Agora where the torch race was held, the Hippodrome where the horse racing was held, and the marine stadium in the Saronic Gulf. The entire city served as a sports complex for the athletic games, utilizing Academia in the north-west area of the city to the port and sea from the Saronic Gulf.
The Greater Panathenaic athletic games included competitions for non-Athenian athletes in the Agora-Stadion and for Athenian athletes in a wide area of the Academia-Agora-Stadion-Saronic Gulf. It was expected to introduce the heritage of Athens to the people in other regions and fortify the sense of civil community spirit by bringing the atmosphere of the festival to the periphery of the city, such as Academia and the coastal areas of the Saronic Gulf. This confirms that the contemporary phenomenon in which social integration through sports festivals took place in the urban space of ancient Athens, as the space for large sporting events is not limited to one venue but extended to several stadiums. In ancient Athens, however, it is meaningful that the Great Panathenaic athletic games as a Pan-Athenian festival were intended to generate a differentiated effect in the urban space by distinguishing the venues and spaces where the Athenians and non-Athenian athletes played.
