섬유조형에서 주름의 은유적 표현 연구

Elephant is an animal which has emotions and psychological expressions highly similar to those of human. Wrinkles of elephant describe their history inhered in life as if realizing itself by repeating to form traces of time and formation. For this study, elephant was selected as a motif representing human and wrinkles of elephant containing the meaning of life, not the only physical wrinkles appearing outside, were investigated through a metaphorical expression of its wrinkles and embodied into a piece of work.
The study, with a metaphorical expression of wrinkles of elephant, intended to express a difference in thoughts gained from repetitive experiences connoting the passage of time and various experiences of human being, a memory of human emotions according to such and a development of inner expression connoting the trace of time in a figurative or an abstract way. It was also planned to conduct a study mainly on fiber formation works by reinterpreting wrinkles targeting the expression connoting space and time.
The study intended to consider the similarity between human and elephant and the cultural symbols carried by elephant on the theoretical basis and to add the depth of expression through wrinkles appeared in the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. Furthermore, a work was embodied by utilizing two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects and applying various production techniques such as image photographing. Among a broad range of techniques, drawing dyeing, silkscreen, DTP (Digital Textile Printing), wax resist dyeing, crack, colored discharge printing, white discharge printing, bleaching dyeing, combustion method and image photographing were used in this study.
‘Wrinkle' was selected as an object of expression through the theoretical background and an attempt of production for a work and it was able to show the effective formativeness in producing a work described with a metaphorical expression. Drawing dyeing, silkscreen and DTP techniques which were able to show a realistic expression with a fiber formation expression could display repeatedly the projective property of time and the image with the effect of superposition appearing in a space. These were suggested that they could be expressed with a modern expression technique which allows creating a new image. Moreover, wax resist dyeing, crack, colored discharge printing, white discharge printing, bleaching dyeing techniques and combustion method in flat surface were able to express metaphorically the overlapping effect of colors, a change of colors according to technique and a process of eliminating material by combustion.
It was verified that color formation which appears after adding color on the surface of cement and PVC show different brightness and chroma from silk and cotton that used by the researcher and show the color formation of oil paints in pure fine arts.
Lastly, through a fluid moving by image photographing not the freeze-frame, it was filmed both of the floating passage of time with adding visual effect and realistic sensation along with emotional expression. In addition, it was suggested that an enlargement of metaphorical expression of wrinkles via expressing them as a new cognition in experience.
With the work of the researcher, it was attempted to produce a work with artistic merit through the passage of time in flat, the expression of superimposition in space, the use of various materials, the features of each technique and production processes. Besides, the study was to increase the possibility of artistic values of modern fiber crafts with pure painting expression of modern art, that is to say, nonfunctional expression, with the use of expression techniques and various materials to express fiber formation of modern art.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

코끼리는 인간의 감정과 심리적 표현이 매우 유사한 동물이다. 코끼리의 주름은 시간 속에서의 흔적과 생성을 반복하며 자신을 구현하듯 삶에 내재된 자신의 역사를 시각적으로 나타낸다. 본 연구는 인간을 대변하는 모티프로 코끼리를 선택하고 코끼리 주름의 은유적 표현을 통해 형태에서 보이는 물질적인 주름이 아닌, 삶의 의미가 담긴 주름을 탐구하고 작품으로 형상화 하고자 한다.
코끼리 주름의 은유적 표현으로 인간의 다양한 경험들과 시간의 흐름을 내포한 반복적인 경험에서 얻는 생각의 차이, 그에 따른 희로애락의 기억, 시간의 흔적이 내포된 내적 표현 전개를 구상 또는 추상으로 표현하고자 하였다. 그리고 시공간을 내재한 표현 대상으로 주름을 재해석하여 섬유 조형 작품을 중심으로 연구해 보고자 한다.
본 연구에서는 이론적 바탕으로 인간과 코끼리의 유사성, 코끼리가 지닌 문화적 상징을 고찰하고 질 들뢰즈(Gilles Deleuze)의 철학 속에 나타나는 주름을 통해 표현의 깊이를 더하고자 하였다. 또한 평면과 입체적인 오브제의 활용과 영상 촬영 등 다양한 제작 기법을 적용하여 작품을 형상화 하였다.
다양한 기법들 중 묘염, 실크스크린 기법, DTP(Didital Textile Printing) 기법, 납방염, 크랙(Crack), 착색 발염기법, 백색 발염기법, 탈색염, 연소기법, 영상 촬영 등을 사용하였다.
위의 이론적 배경과 작품 제작 시도를 통해 표현의 대상을‘주름’으로 선택하였고 은유적 표현으로 나타낸 작품 제작에 있어서 효과적인 조형성을 나타낼 수 있었다. 섬유 조형 표현으로 사실적인 표현을 할 수 있는 묘염, 실크스크린 기법, DTP기법은 공간 안에서 나타나는 중첩의 효과로 시간의 투영성과 이미지를 반복적으로 보여줄 수 있으며 새로운 이미지 연출이 가능한 현대적인 표현기법으로 표현 될 수 있음을 제시한다. 또한 평면에서의 납방염, 크랙, 착색 발염기법, 백색 발염 기법, 탈색염, 연소기법은 색의 중첩적 효과와 기법에 따른 색의 변화, 연소시켜 소재가 없어지는 과정을 통해 시간의 흐름과 다양한 경험을 은유적으로 표현될 수 있었다.
시멘트와 PVC의 표면 위에 색채를 입혀 나타나는 발색은 연구자가 사용하였던 실크, 면과는 다른 명도, 채도가 나타나며 순수 미술의 유화물감에서 느껴지는 발색이 나타남을 알 수 있었다.
마지막으로 영상촬영을 통해 정지된 화면이 아닌 유동적인 움직임을 나타냄으로서 시각적인 효과를 더하여 유기적인 시간의 흐름과 사실적인 느낌을 감성적인 표현을 더하여 촬영하고 경험에서의 새로운 인식으로 표현함으로서 주름의 은유적 표현의 확대를 제시하였다.
본 연구자 작품을 통해 평면에서의 시간의 흐름과 공간에서의 중첩 표현, 다양한 재료 이용 및 기법의 특징과 제작과정을 통하여 예술적 가치가 있는 작품을 만들고자 하였다. 나아가 현대 미술의 섬유조형 표현을 위한 표현 기법과 다양한 재료 이용으로 현대미술의 순수회화 표현 즉, 비 기능적인 표현으로 현대 섬유 공예의 예술적 가치의 표현 가능성을 높이고자 한다.
