The purpose of this study is to find a way to analyze the 'psychological action' that works in musical songs. Psychological action is an invisible and mental movement and an important factor that acts as an internal driving force for physical action such as singing, speaking, and movement. In order to establish a consistent framework to define the complicated and ambiguous psychology of characters as clear actions, this study applied 'Actioning', a technique that defines psychological actions hidden in dialogue as action verbs, to musical songs. Actioning is a useful technique that compresses the character's mind into concrete and simple words and focuses the actor's psychology on one clear action. However, in order to apply the existing skill, which was originally applied only to dialogue, to musical songs, the subject of psychological action should be expanded depending on the situation, the scope of analysis should not be limited to lyrics, and musical factors should be considered together. Through the Actioning that reflects these improvements, this study analyzed the psychological action in ‘Maria,’ the representative song of the musical <West Side Story>. The song explained in detail how to analyze the role's various psychological action even though it is a kind of Character Song that mainly expresses emotions, and the composition and lyrics are somewhat simple and monotonous, and it is sung alone. It is expected that the research on psychological action and Actioning will be expanded to more diverse musical genres in the future.
