본 연구는 초기치매 환자의 인지재활을 위해 적용한 챈트중심의 인지재활 프로그램의 효과성을 알아보고자 실시되었다. 연구대상은 서울소재 치매지원센터를 이용하는 만 62 - 87세 이용자 중 초기치매환자 18명을 무작위로 실험군과 통제군에 각각 9명씩 배정하였다. 연구절차는 실험군 9명을 개별 세션으로 구성하여 인사노래 및 지남력 확인, 노래 부르기, 단어 즉시회상, 신체 활동, 단어 지연회상, 지남력 확인 및 마무리 순서로 진행하여 각각 30분씩 주 2회, 총 5주간 실시하였다. 실험군과 통제군 각각의 사전ㆍ사후비교 및 그룹간 비교를 위해 신경인지기능 평가 도구인 7분 검사(7 Minute Screening Test; 7MS)를 실시하였으며 평균 지남력(Orientation), 평균 기억력(Memory), 평균 언어 유창성(Verbal Fluency)을 비교ㆍ분석하였다. 본 연구 결과 실험군의 사전ㆍ사후 평가에서 평균 지남력과 평균 기억력은 유의미한 향상을 보였으나(p<.05), 평균 언어 유창성에서는 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았으며 통제군은 세 가지 검사 모두에서 유의미한 향상을 보이지 않았다. 또한 그룹 간 비교 결과 지남력(p<.001)과 평균기억력(p<.05)에서 통계학적으로 유의미한 차이를 나타냈다. 따라서 챈트를 이용한 인지재활 프로그램이 초기치매환자의 지남력, 기억력에 긍정적인 영향을 주었으며, 이와 같은 결과를 바탕으로 인지 기능향상을 위한 치료 전략으로서의 챈트의 활용에 대한 지속적인 연구가 요구된다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a chant-based cognitive rehabilitation program for patients with early stage Alzheimer's disease(AD). Participants were 18 older adults, ages 62 to 87 years, who used a dementia care center in Seoul. All participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental (n = 9) or the control group (n = 9). The experimental group received a 30-minute individual session twice a week for five weeks while the control group received the conventional program in the center. The 7 Minute Screening (7MS) test was administered to assess orientation, memory, and verbal fluency of the participants in both groups. Results showed statistically significant increases in the scores from pretest to posttest on orientation (p<.001, d = .72) and memory (p<.05, d = .51) in the experimental group. All scores except verbal fluency showed significant increases at post-test for the experimental group while no significant increases were found in the control group. Comparisons between the control and experimental groups revealed statistical significance on orientation and memory, but not on the verbal fluency test. The results imply that chant can be a practical method for delaying cognitive decline among patients with early stage AD, and further investigation is needed.
