Objectives : To study the morphologic characteristics of the flours of medicinal plants used as Cheon-gung(川芎) in the Korean market, plants distributed as Chmn-gung(川芎) in Korean market were widely collected. The flour of the plants were analyzed and compared by microscope examination according to the factors such as the original plant. where it is from, and when it was collected. Methods : Medicinal plants distributed as Chmn-gung(Jll~5) in Korean market were widely collected. The genuineness and quality were checked for selection of swimen. The flour of the specimen was mounted by a solution of Glycerin. Acetic acid and Water at the rate of 1 : 1 : 1. The sample was observed by optic microscope, Results : According to the factors such as the original plant. years of growth or habitat, the flours showed the following morpholcgic characteristics. 1. According to the factors such as the original plant. years of growth, habitat, the flours of Cheon-gung(川芎) showed the following morphologic 1) The color of the flour is grayish or light brown. 2) A number of starch particles are observed. Single particles show a circular or ellipsoidal shape with a diameter of 5-18 m. The belly pint is in a shape of just a point. long suture, or a A line. A small number of multi-particles consisted uf 3) The vessels are helical vessels but reticulate vessels and stair shaped vessels are also observed. The diameter is 18-55~. For some helical vessels. the thickened walls are connected to each other forming a similar shape with reticulate vessels. 4) Accessory cells are deep yellow. Seen from the surface. it forms a polygon. 5 ) The light yellow wood fiber usually forms a bundle. The fiber is in a long spindle shape with a diameter of 13-3Op. The thickness uf the fiber wall is irregular, and a small number of broken fat chamhers can be seen. Walls of secretary cells are thin and numerous oil drops are found inside it. 2. While the diameter of 1 or 2 year old Ligusticum chlmnriong Hort.(土川芎) is 18-55㎛, that of the 3 year old is 18-25㎛ which is smaller. Also, the accessory cell and the cell wall are thinner. 3. Murphologic characteristics of 2 year old Cnidium offiinnole Makind(土川芎) from Jechon Choongchungbmkdo and Kyongsan Kyungsnagbwkdo and, Lifiusticum chunnxiong Hort.(土川芎) form Jechon Chimngchungbookdo and Chinbu Kangwondo didn`t show any significant difference according to the habitat. From these results, Chwn-gung(川芎) from the domestic market didn`t show any significant difference in morphologic study by microscope examination according to factors such as the original plant. years of growth, habitat. Especially. from the morphologic similarity of the flours. Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort(土川芎) of Korea and China, Cnidiirm offkinale Makino(日川芎) seems to be genealogically vew close. Conclusion : From the micmscope examination of the flours from medicinal plants disbibutcd as Cheon-gung(川芎) in the Korean market. there was no significant difference found accordng to the original plant, years of growth or habitat.
