지역교회와 목회에 공헌하는 「신학지남」: 회고와 전망

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 소고는 「신학지남」 발간 105주년을 맞이하여 그 역사적 정체성을 평가하되, 특히 1918년 창간호와 1954년 속간호가 밝힌 「신학지남」의 의도와 방향성에 주목하여 「신학지남」이 지역교회와 목회에 얼마나 공헌했는지 공(功)과 과(過)를 객관적으로 비평함으로써 향후 방향성을 제안하는 데에 목표가 있다. 이를 위해 그동안 「신학지남」에 게재된 모든 논문을 계량서지학적으로 분석한다. 분류의 기준은 세 가지로, ‘당대의 정통신학에 대한 도전과 수호에 관한 논문,’ ‘당대의 교회와 목회 문제에 관한 논문,’ ‘당대의 사회 문제에 관한 논문’ 등이다. 이 분류와 분석을 통해 판단할 때, 「신학지남」이 시대마다 신학적인 이슈와 교회론적 이슈, 그리고 사회적 이슈들에 관해 여러 논문을 통해 적극적으로 대응하려고 노력한 흔적이 보인다. 그러나 「신학지남」의 수록 논문들에는 세 가지 면에서 비평적 한계도 드러낸다. 첫째, 신학적인 이슈들에 대해 시대를 막론하고 끊임없이 변증하고 우리 교단의 정통적인 신학을 지키기 위한 노력을 아끼지 않았지만, 최근 십 수년간 다룬 신학적인 주제들은 시대의 신학적인 도전과 이슈에 적극적으로 논박하고 변증하는 데에 충실하지 못했다. 둘째, 지난 105년간 게재된 논문들은 신학적인 이슈에 관한 논문이 지배적이었던 반면, 역사적 칼빈주의와 복음주의 정신이 소중히 여기는 대사회적인 책임으로서의 대응은 상대적으로 미흡했으며, 지역교회들이 분투하는 현장의 과제들에 대해서도 적절히 답하지 못한 점이 두드러진다. 셋째로, 더욱 심각한 것은, 교회 문제와 사회 문제에 대한 논문들이 21세기에 들어서 더 현저하게 감소했다. 이러한 한계로 인해 「신학지남」은 위기를 맞은 듯 보인다. 그러므로 다시 회복하여 본래의 정신으로 돌아가야 한다. 총신이 교단 신학교로서 지역 교회들에게 신학적 지남을 제공해야 한다는 책임감을 엄중히 받아들여야 한다. 「신학지남」은 창간호와 속간호의 정신을 이어받아, 우리 시대에 교회와 사회가 직면한 중요하고 긴급한 이슈들에 관해 지남하는 역할을 해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to evaluate the historical identity of The Theological Review on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of its publication and to suggest future directions by an objective assessment of its contributions to local churches and ministries, paying particular attention to its original intent and directions of publication as revealed in its first issue in 1918 and the resumed issue in 1954. To this end, all the articles published in The Theological Review will be quantitatively and bibliometrically analyzed. There are three criteria for categorization: ‘articles on the contemporary theological challenges and defense of orthodoxy,’ ‘articles on contemporary ecclesiastical and pastoral issues,’ and ‘articles on contemporary social issues.’ Judging from this categorization and analysis, it is evident that The Theological Review has made efforts to actively respond to theological, ecclesiastical, and social issues in each era through various articles. However, the articles in the journal also reveal critical limitations in three ways. First, while the journal has been constantly engaged in apologetics on theological issues throughout the ages and has spared no effort to defend the orthodox theology of our denomination, the theological topics covered in recent decades have not been faithful to actively debate and apologize for the theological challenges and issues of our time. Second, the articles published over the past 105 years have been dominated by theological issues, with relatively little response to the social responsibilities cherished by historic Calvinism and the Evangelicalism, nor have they adequately addressed the on-the-ground challenges of local churches. Third, and more seriously, the number of articles on ecclesiastical and social issues has declined more markedly in the 21st century. With these limitations, The Theological Review seems to be in crisis. Therefore, it needs to be revitalized and returned to its original spirit. As a denominational seminary, it must take seriously its responsibility to provide theological training to local churches. In keeping with the original intent of its first issue, The Theological Review should serve as an ongoing journal on important and urgent issues facing the church and society in our time.
