<헌화가>의 확장, 영화 <은교> -젊음에 대한 동경과 사랑- = The Expansion of “Heonhwaga,” the Movie “Eungyo” - Yearning and Love for Youth -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 고전문학을 지루하고 어려운 것으로 이해하는 ‘MZ세대’에게 ‘어떻게 하면 고전문학을 쉽고 재밌게 가르칠 수 있을까?’라는 필자의 고민에서 시작되었다. 이를 해결하기 위해 성균관대학교 교양강좌인 ‘한국고전문학’ 수업에서 현대적 변용작품을 통해 고전문학에 대한 흥미요소를 끌어내는데 중점을 맞춰 강의를 진행하였고, 학생들과 토론을 통한 합의된 주관적 견해를 도출했다. 도출된 견해를 중점적으로 고전문학을 이해하는 데 활용하였다.
이 글에서 주텍스트로 삼고 있는 영화 <은교>는 고전시가 <헌화가>의 현대 변용작품이다. <은교>는 현대사회를 배경으로 <헌화가>를 변용하여 풀어낸 현실성이 높은 작품으로, 인물, 상징, 주제 등 다방면에서 고전과 일치하는 높은 일치성을 보인다. 영화 <은교>의 중심 주제는 노화와 젊음에 대한 동경이라는 보편적 감정과 관련됐으나, 인물의 나이 설정 등에서 현대 사회의 윤리적 기준과 어긋나 일부 대중의 공감을 이끌어내지 못해, 수용적인 측면에서 다소 부족한 측면을 드러냈다. 그러나 영화라는 장르의 특성을 활용하여 고전시가의 주제의식을 생생하게 표현하였고, 특수성을 가미해 흥미롭게 풀어감으로써 일부 대중들에게 는 고전문학을 효과적으로 전달하였으므로 성공적인 변용작품으로 평가했다.
고전시가 <헌화가>와 이를 현대적으로 변용한 작품인 영화 <은교>의 주제를 노인의 젊은 여인에 대한 사랑과 동경이라고 해석하였다. 두 작품은 사랑의 감정과 함께 늙음에 대한 부끄러움과 가질 수 없는 젊음에 대한 동경을 이야기한다. 같은 주제를 다루는 두 작품은 고전시가에서 현대작품으로 변용되면서 특수성이 더해지고 구체화되었다. 인물들이 더욱 입체적이고 상호작용을 보여주며 행위에 대해 납득할 수 있게 변화된 것이다.
또한 현대 작품에서는 현대적인 가치관을 추가하여 고전의 가치관에서 더욱 확장되었다. 사랑이라는 감정에서 파생된 여러 감정들을 함께 보여주어 더욱 다채롭다. 영화 <은교>는 토론을 통해 세운 기준인 현실성, 일치성, 수용성에 잘 부합하는 작품으로 변용이 매우 잘된 작품으로 평가할 수 있다. 두 작품을 분석하고 비교하는 과정을 통해 두 작품이 전하는 메시지를 파악할 수 있었고 현대에 더 적합하게 해석할 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study first discusses the writer’s concern regarding how to teach classical literature easily and in an interesting way to the “MZ Generation,” who perceive it as boring and difficult. To solve this problem, the lecture focused on drawing interest in classical literature through modern transformations in the “Korean classical literature” class, a liberal arts course at Sungkyunkwan University, and drew consensus subjective views through discussion with students. The derived views were used mainly to understand classical literature.
The main text of this article, “Eungyo” is a modern transformation of the classical poem “Heonhwaga.” “Eungyo” is a realistic work that is based on the background of modern society, transforming “Heonhwaga” and shows high consistency in many ways, including characters, symbols, and themes. The main theme of the movie “Eungyo” is related to the universal feeling of longing for aging and youth, but it failed to elicit sympathy from some of the public due to the ethical standards of modern society in terms of age setting. However, using the characteristics of the genre of movies, the theme of classical poetry was vividly expressed. Furthermore, by adding special characteristics, classical literature was effectively delivered to some of the public, so it was evaluated as a successful work.
The classical poem interpreted the theme of “Heonhwaga” and “Eungyo,” a modern adaptation of it, as the old man’s love and admiration for young women. These works discuss feelings of love, shame about old age, and longing for youth that cannot be had. The two works dealing with the same theme were transformed from classical poetry into modern works, adding specialty and materialization. The characters have been changed to be more three-dimensional, interactive and convincing about their actions.
In addition, modern works have expanded further from classical values by adding modern values. It is more colorful because it shows various emotions derived from feelings of love together. The movie “Eungyo” is a work that meets the standards set through discussion, reality, consistency, and acceptability, and can be evaluated as a very well-transformed work. Through the process of analyzing and comparing the two works, the message delivered by these works could be identified and interpreted more appropriately in modern times.
