선교학의 회심 = 성찰과 변혁

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 ‘회심’에 대한 기존 선교학의 이론과 이에 대한 기독교 인류학적 재성찰을 다룬다. 최근까지도 회심, 그리고 회심에 관한 이론들(회심론)은 선교학의 가장 중심적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 주제로서 자리매김해왔다. 그러나 탈식민주의 사조와 남반구기독교의 성장, 그리고 서구 세속주의의 심화 등과 같은 새로운 물결은 회심에 대한 논의를 거북하게 만들어왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 선교학의 본질은 ‘그리스도로의 회심’을 목적으로 하는 학문이기에 회심론은 결코 소홀히 다루어질 수 없는 주제이다. 따라서 본 연구는 지금까지 선교학에서 다루어져 왔던 회심론에 대한 역사적 · 서사적 고찰을 통하여 회심이 선교학의 연구주제로서 다루어지지 않게 된 배경과 지금까지의 회심론이 갖고 있던 주체중심적 · 서구중심적인 문제점을 지적하고자 한다. 또한 이러한 앞선 문제점들에도 불구하고 회심론이 현대에 다시금 대두하게 된 배경으로서 세계기독교 현상과 기독교인류학의 회심에 대한 세속학적 연구방법론을 소개한다. 세계기독교 현상은 우리가 전통적으로 갖고 있던 서구 중심적 회심에 대한 개념 자체에 문제를 제기하며 이에 대한 해결책으로서 기독교 인류학과 세속인류학은 우리에게 회심론에 관한 연구대상을 ‘회심’한 개인이 아닌 회심한 ‘개인’으로 옮길 것을 요구한다.
그리고 선교학은 이러한 요구들에 대한 응답으로서 새로운 과제들을 갖게 된다. 회심과 삶의 변화와의 상관관계, 참된 회심이란 무엇인가에 대한 재정의 문제, 에큐메니칼 운동의 회심 개념, 개인적 차원과 사회적 차원의 회심 문제, 성화와 의화의 관계 정립 등 회심론은 단순히 실천적인 영역의 문제일 뿐만 아니라 결론적으로는 기독론에까지 이르는 기독교의 핵심적인 문제임이 드러난다. 그리고 인류학적 방법론은 이러한 회심에 대한 선교학의 재고찰에 새로운 관점을 제시해 줄 것이다. 결국 회심론은 희망의 인류학이며 이 희망의 종착역은 그리스도의 회심으로 귀결된다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 예수 그리스도 자신이 죄 없음에도 불구하고 죄를 고백하는 세례의 장면은 진정한 회심의 의미를 우리에게 일깨우는 역설적인 변화의 사건임을 상기시키고, 이 사건은 선교학이 다시 한 번 회심론에 주목해야 하는 이유임을 드러내고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is an attempt to reflect the idea of conversion from the Anthropology of Christianity. Although ‘conversion’ has been the main agenda in the study of missions, the current academic trends of the postcolonial discourse and the rise of Southern Christianity including the secularization of the West have hindered to articulate the question of conversion. However, since the study of Christian mission and its goal is to articulate the idea of “conversion to Christ,” the theory of conversion should be remained as the most important subject. Therefore, this article is to evaluate the theory of conversion within the mission studies in the past, and to point out the reason why the conversion has not been seriously articulated. It will also articulate the problem of subjectivity, particularly the Western subjectivity and its problem in the study of conversion. And, although the study of conversion has its problematic nature, the study of conversion has re-emerged as an important subject within anthropology. In this way, this article is to introduce anthropological methodologies as a way to re-evaluate the traditional theory of conversion, and to suggest anthropology of Christianity to be an alternative methodology for the study of conversion; the subject of study is to move from the “conversion” of the individual to the “individual subject” who has converted.
Therefore, the mission studies is required to answer to new agendas: “the correlation between conversion and the change of life;” “what is true conversion?” and etc. It also need to articulate the idea of conversion not only in terms of individuality, but also within the socio-political life of individuals; it suggests that the idea of conversion also should be articulated in terms of sanctification and glorification. It also suggest that the idea of conversion is argued not only the area of praxis, but at the end, it should to be connected the idea of Christology. Therefore, it suggests to take the anthropological methodology and approach as an alternative way of doing the mission studies, since it provides new perspective to reflect the idea of conversion in theology.
