Two-way Causality and the Slope of the Great Gatsby Curve: Evidence from US Regional and Cross-country Data = 소득불평등과 이동성의 양방향 인과관계에 대한 실증분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 이동성과 소득불평등 간의 양방향 인과관계에 대한 실증분석 논문으로, 이동성과 소득불평등의 여러 다른 결정요인들을 통제하였다. 미국 지역별 데이터를 이용한 도구변수 추정에서의 소득불평등의 이동성에 대한 효과는 이에 상응하는 OLS 추정에서의 효과보다 3배이상 큰 것으로 추정되었다. 미국 지역별 데이터를 이용한 분석에서 소득불평등과 이동성은 안정적인 균형을 나타낼 수 있는 관계로 추정되었으며 추정결과 존재하는 것으로 나타난 승수효과는 소득재분배 정책은 이동성도 높이는 추가적인 효과를 가짐을 의미한다. 국가별 데이터를 이용한 분석에서 고등교육단계에서 장학금이나 학자금대출과 같은 개인단위 지원이 이동성과 매우 강한 양의 관계를 가지는 것으로 추정되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper investigates the slope of the Great Gatsby Curve, while allowing for the two-way causal relationship between mobility and inequality and controlling for a host of potential determinants of the relationship. Our estimation results based on US regional data indicate that the effects of inequality on mobility in instrumental variable estimations are more than three times larger than those in comparable OLS estimations. The estimated relationship between mobility and inequality using US regional data displays a stable equilibrium. The identified multiplier effect indicates that policies for one would have a positive effect on the other, implying that redistributive policies may have the additional benefit of improving mobility. Estimation results using the cross-country data show a strong positive association of mobility with public expenditure on tertiary education directed at individuals, indicating the importance of scholarships and student loans in improving mobility.
