The diaries of Ryu family in Chollanam-do Gurye-gun Omi-dong are memorandums for managing a family as a grandson of Yangban family rather than private and internal records of an individual. The Ryu family migrated from Daegu to Gurye in the end of the 18th century because they searched for a new settlement to overcome their low social status level. Ryu family successfully settled in Gurye and grew rapidly a s a prosperous Yangban family in that area, based on their governmental career, economic power, and academic capacity. The diaries of Ryu family contain various contexts of the traditional Yangban family’s responses to the great social change of transition to modern times from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Through their diaries, we want to see interesting aspects of ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ that are confronted, collided, and transformed.
