Recently, carbon composites have been applied to various fields. However, carbon composites have not been applied to fishing boats due to the structural standards centred on glass composites. In this study, we conducted a structural strength evaluation study for the application of carbon composites in the field of fishing vessels. A hull minimum thickness verification test and a hull joint verification test were conducted. The verification was based on equal or better performance compared to glass composites. The results showed that carbon composites can reduce weight by 20% compared to glass composites. In the case of hull joints, the thickness of the joint seam had to be increased by the thickness of the hull in order to apply carbon composites. Using the results of the hull minimum thickness verification test and the hull joint verification test, a demonstration fishing boat and a comparison fishing boat were built. The performance verification test was conducted using the two fishing boats. The demonstration fishing boat with carbon composites was 20.45% lighter than the comparison fishing boat. The speed was 162% faster and the fuel consumption was reduced by 16.8%. Through this research, we hope that the standards for applying carbon composites to fishing boats will be established and the commercialisation of fishing boats with carbon composites will proceed.
