Humphrey Chadbourne, of whom Hon. William Willis of Portland, Mc., gives a brief sketch in a previous volume of the Register,* settled at Portsmouth, N. H., as early as 1631. According to Dr. Farmer, he came to this country "on the invitation of Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Capt. John Mason." Hubbard refers to him as "the chiefest" of the "artificers" who came to Portsmouth at that time; and states that he "built the Great House (as it used to be called) at Strawberry Bank." He afterwards removed to South Berwick, Me.
