다각화전략이 조직구조에 미치는 영향 = Diversification Strategy and Organizational Structure

Abstract The main logic of this study is based on Chandler’s premise of “Structure follows strategy.“ Since
Rumelt’s first empirical study, the relationship of strategy and structure becomes the mainstream research issue in strategic management field. As most of the studies are focused on centralization as the core element of organizational structure, other elements don’t receive so much attention as centralization. But centralization is not all of organizational structure and requires the support of other elements for effective implementation of diversification strategy. For this reason, we suggest centralization, performance evaluation, control type, and integration as the critical elements of organizational structure and expect that they are aligned with the diversification type in order to create synergy or not. According to empirical results, diversification strategy is related to more centralization, more subjectivity in performance evaluation, more behavior control, and more integration. The results indicate that the firm should find the fit between diversification strategy and each element of organizational structure, not the fit between diversification strategy and centralization alone. The contribution of the study is to verify the argument of Chandler in Korean context and to confirm that every element of organizational structure is fitted to diversification strategy.
