영화 속 장면과 음악의 부조화 활용방안 연구 : Soundtrack Dissonance(배경음악 부조화)를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 영화 속 장면과 음악이 부조화를 이루는 Soundtrack Dissonance(배경음악 부조화)를 통해 영화음악이 보다 독립적이고 효과적으로 쓰일 수 있는 활용방안들을 연구하는 것에 목적을 둔다.
일반적으로 영화음악은 영화의 내러티브를 강화하는 역할을 하며, 장면을 뒷받침한다. 하지만 때로 영화감독과 영화 음악가들의 의도에 의해 장면과 대립하는 음악이 쓰이기도 한다. 그리고 이러한 음악들은 장면과 부조화를 이루며 오히려 관객들의 뇌리에 강한 인상을 남겨주거나, 장면에 몰입을 차단함으로써 그 장면을 초월적인 시선으로 바라보게 한다.
하지만 장면과 부조화를 이루는 음악이 사용되는 것은 자칫 잘못하면 영화 전체적인 흐름을 해치고 감상자의 몰입을 방해할 수 있기 때문에 ‘Soundtrack Dissonance’ 는 영화 전체의 개연성과 통일성을 해치지 않는 선에서 사용될 때, 부조화를 통한 아이러니를 창출하며 관객들에게 색다른 시각과 재미를 선사한다.
이런 Soundtrack Dissonance는 감상자에게 장면을 인상 깊게 남길 수 있는 효과를 거두며 여러 감독들과 영화 음악가들을 통해 자주 쓰이는 기법임에도 불구하고, 장면을 뒷받침하는 일반적인 영화음악의 사용에 비해 상대적으로 그 연구가 활발하지 않았던 것이 사실이다.
따라서 본 연구는 이와 같이 장면과 부조화를 이루는 반어적 영화음악의 사용을 ‘Soundtrack Dissonance‘ 로 지칭하고, 그 특징과 활용방안에 대해서 연구하였다. 더 나아가 부조화를 이용한 예술적 시도가 갑자기 드러난 기법이 아닌, 예로부터 빈번히 쓰이던 예술적 기법임을 증명하고, 이와 같은 부조화 기법이 영화음악에서 쓰였을 경우 어떠한 활용도가 있는지 분석하였다.
이번 연구를 통해 ‘Soundtrack Dissonance’의 사용은 그 장면을 통해 이야기 하고자 하는 감독들의 의도를 분명하게 전달할 수 있게 하며, 관객들로 하여금 비판적 시각을 설정하게 하고, 때에 따라서는 관객들의 장면에 대한 과도한 몰입을 차단하고, 장르의 특성을 견고히 하는 등의 효과로 활용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
이처럼 ‘Soundtrack Dissonance’는 장면을 강조하고, 영화에 대한 색다른 해석을 부여할 수 있는 기법이기에 앞으로의 음악가들에게 관습적인 음악사용을 넘어서는 아이디어로 활발히 사용되기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to research ways to utilize film music more independently and effectively through Soundtrack Dissonance, where the scene and music in the film are incongruous.
In general, film music functions to strengthen the narrative of a film, supporting the scene. However, sometimes film directors and film composers use music that is contrary to the scene on purpose. And this music that clashes with the scene impact audience's mind or obstructs them to be immersed in the scene to look at it with a transcendental viewpoint.
However, using music that fails to be harmonized with a scene can easily mess the overall flow of a movie and disturb the viewer's immersion. Therefore, ‘Soundtrack Dissonance' only can be used without detriment of probability and unity of the entire film to give the audience a different view with fun, creating irony through dissonance.
‘Soundtrack Dissonance' is a technique that is often used by many directors and film composers, achieving an effect of impressing viewers with the scene. But the researches about it has been less active than the use of general film music.
Therefore, this study referred to the use of ironic film music that brings discordance with the scene as ‘Soundtrack Dissonance,' and studied its features and usage. Furthermore, it proved that the artistic attempt of using dissonance was not a cropped-up technique but was frequently used in the past and also analyzed the availability of this dissonance technique when it is used in film music.
Through this study, it is proved that the use of ‘Soundtrack Dissonance' made it possible to clearly deliver what the director intended to say through the scene, and gave the audience a critical perspective, and sometimes obstructed audience's excessive immersion in the scene. And it also strengthened the characteristics of the genre.
As such, ‘Soundtrack Dissonance' is a technique that can emphasize the scene and give a different interpretation of the film. I expect that supporting the subject that a movie tries to say, it can be actively used as an idea of independent art that goes beyond the conventional use of music.
