고대 아테네 무덤 조형물 연구 -시대적 변화 및 어린이 무덤 조형물을 중심으로- = A Study on the Changes of the Attic Funerary Monuments and the Meaning of the Bird on the Children’s Funeral Reliefs

국문 초록 (Abstract)

고대 아테네의 무덤 조형 기념물은 두 번의 큰 변화기를 맞이하였다. 그 첫 변화는 기원전 5세기 초, 상고기 때의 사적이고 호화로운 무덤 조형물이 급격히 줄어들게 된 것이다. 두 번째 변화는 기원전 5세기 말, 사적인 장례 문화가 다시 발달하게 된 것이다. 그런데 상고기 무덤 조형물에는 남성상이 주로 나타났다면, 고전기에는 여성이나 아이 등도 나타났으며, 어린이 무덤 조형물에는 특히 새 이미지가 두드러졌다. 이 글의 전반부는 두 차례의 큰 변화가 일어난 역사적 배경을 다각적으로 분석하고 있으며, 후반부는 사례 연구로서 어린이 무덤에 많이 보이는 새의 의미를 프시케(psyche)와 관련하여서 살펴보았다. 두 번의 큰 변화를 가져온 공통적 배경으로는 법제적 요인과 더불어 전쟁이 수반한 사회적, 정치적 요소 등을 들 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 또한 어린이 조형물의 새는 죽은 아이의 영혼을 좋은 세계로 인도하는 동반자, 안내자로서의 역할을 하였을 것이라는 점을 종교적, 관념적 측면에서 살펴보았다. 결론적으로 아테네 무덤 조형물은 단순한 장식품이 아니라 사회적, 정치적, 종교적인 여러 복합적 요인이 작동한 결과물, 오랜 관습과 전통과 새로운 상황이 빚어내는 기억의 복합체였다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The funerary monuments of ancient Athens faced two major periods of change: the first change occurred between 500-480 BC., when the number of private and luxurious tomb sculptures made during the archaic period were drastically reduced, and around 430 BC., the private funeral monuments developed again.
This study aimed at investigating the legal, political, and social backgrounds and characteristics that brought about such changes in funeral culture. These changes reflected socio-political relationships. It is followed by a case study of funerary reliefs from the late 5th century, focusing on the meaning of ‘bird-motif’ that are often found on funerary reliefs for children. Most people claim that this was because birds were children's pets and other claim that they represented the souls of the dead. I tried to clarify that the bird would have served as a companion and guide to lead the soul of the deceased to a good world.
In summary, the ancient Athenian funerary monuments were not just ornaments, but a complex of memories of old customs, traditions and new circumstances, as a result of combination of various social, political and religious factors.
