This paper deals with the methodological issue of how positive, interpretive, and narrative approches can be complemented, thereby enhancing the accuracy of analysis. Positivism representing the world of abstract number and hermeneutics representing the world of story are distinctive with each and thus can not be located on the same methodological continuum. From the perspective of political economy, however, both epistemology and ontology are to be employed in a complementary way. This is because the world of number has been embedded in that of story during the transition to modernity. In an actual research, the goal of methodological complementation can be achieved in the following way. Panal data method analysis may well be a starting point because it covers unobservable, qualitative effects. But the time-series dimension of panal data assumes historical continuity. Therefore, in order to check whether there was a historical discontinuity, it is desirable to employ time dummy variable(s) and to allow it to interact with other independent variable(s). But it is narrative and interpretive approaches that can best perform the role of identifing and interpreting historical event(s) and historical turning point(s).
