This study aims to analyze the characteristics of college entrance system in Korea. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the socio - historical documents, some previous research, and the related works are examined. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, it is social selection that has been the main function of college entrance system in Korea. So the other functions, for example, directing secondary and primary education and integrating social differences are very weak. Second, Korean college entrance system has made much negative effects on the secondary education, especially in that it overheats competition in college entrance examination. Third, the latest conflicts over the college entrance system can be interpreted as a kind of class struggle, in which hegemonic groups in Korea erupt their relentless desires for reproducing and maintaining their social status.
