The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the stress management program on the perceived stress and health promoting behavior of the postpartum women.
The treatments were conducted for 3 months from November 28, 2003 to February 28, 2004. The sample consisted of 30 women 3 to 9 postpartal day at M postpartum women rest room in Jinju city. The postpartum women were divided into an experimental group(15) and control group(15). This study was designed to take a nonequivalent control group in non-synchronized format. The Program consisted of 10 sessions(50minutes/session). In order to measure perceived stress and health promoting behavior, we used The Han's perceived stress scale and Sung's health promoting behavior scale. Analysis of this study was computerized with SAS pakage(version 8.01), and the homogeneity of two groups which may be affected by various variable was tested by Chi-square and t-test. The comparison of pre and post-test score of the perceived stress and health promoting behavior were measured paired t-test and t-test.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows;
1. The degree of perceived stress marked 55.97 by Han's perceived stress scale. The degree of health promoting behavior marked 107.67 by Sung's health promoting behavior scale.
2. The first hypothesis, 'the degree of perceived stress of experimental group performed the stress management program to decrease perceived stress will be decrease more than that of control group' was supported(t=2.28, p<.05).
3. The second hypothesis,'the degree of health promoting behavior of experimental group performed the stress management program to increase health promoting behavior will be increase more than that of control group' was supported(t=2.69, p<.05).
In conclusion, this study through the above results shows that the stress management program is an effective nursing intervention for postpartum women to decrease perceived stress and to increase health promoting behavior.
